how to have ATC say a specific call sign

I was playing around with trying to get the ATC to call
lucky 22 instead of British Aerospace. Under Fs 2k2, in the airlines.cfg I added Lucky.

When I go to change the atc - I selected Lucky as the call sign and made sure it said 22 in the flight number.
But all the atc says is 22.

what did I do wrong?

There is no built-in manufacturer/type called Lucky.  When atc finds an invalid entry it usually says "experimental".

Adding the name to airlines.cfg won't do anything unless the recording is there for atc to reproduce.  There is a utility (Edit VoicePack, I think) that will let you record and add new stuff to atc.

You also have the syntax wrong.  The correct syntax is, for example:

The lines starting with "atc" determine what atc will call me.  In this example atc will call me "American 009" and I will say that I'm "Type Boeing 737" (or maybe 737-400).  ATC_id, I believe, is the tail number.

Edit Voice Pack is the utility Webb was referring to, but it's not as simple as just recording a new name.

What it does is lets the user take existing names and terms spoken by ATC, chop them up, and place them back together in a new order, essentially piecing the phrase you want together.

It's great, but I personally found it to be too time consuming just to get an ATC ID.

I created Kai Tak and once you've got into it it's not too bad.

You get the sounds for one voice and then you use the same 'setup' for all of them, so you only do the main work once

Plus it's a great improvement when the sound you made is actually being used. I thought it well worth the effort, but I can understand people being put off by the 'how-to' which I think is worse than the 'doing'

Does anyone know how to access a list of the existing names/terms spoken by ATC?

There's a file in your ...\FS2002\AIRCRAFT folder called airlines.cfg which you can print out using Notepad. This gives you the airlines.

There's no way to get to all the airport names, aircraft types etc without installing EditVoicPak (EVP) as far as I know. I found from exploring EVP that Concorde, which I was going to set up,  is already a standard word that is available but not used by FS.

Thanks RollerBall... I'm familiar w/ that file. In fact, I've added such things as "Southwest Airlines", "Braniff Airways", etc., to it but to no avail (re: getting ATC to recognize the airline... even w/ changing atc_airline in aircraft.cfg).

I have tinkered with airlines.cfg and have found many (20+) airlines, mostly US so far, it will recognize, even some smaller, regional a/l like Wisconsin, and I believe it does recognize Southwest.

Try variations on the names, i.e, for American Airlines, it recog. American, but not American Airlines, or TransWorld Airlines, it recog. TWA. In general it doesnt recog. names containing 'Airline' or 'Airways.

I simply add any airlines I wish to try, including variations, to the airlines.cfg, and then fly with 'flight following'. Simply request and then cancel flight following repeatedly as you step thru the 'airline' in change aircraft window. A little tedious, but works.

Once you find the airline names that work, you can 'stick' an airline name to any a/c using the 'atc_airline=' line as described earlier..

These are the airlines I have found to work, adding them to the airlines.cfg file will make them show in the drop-down airline list in the Change Aircraft>ATC Name>Change window

Eastern, Northwest, Ozark, American, United,
Pan Am, Delta, TWA, Air France, Wisconsin, UPS, Swissair, KLM, Qantas, Alaska,  Aloha, Continental, Hawaiian, Horizon, Sun Country, World,
Air Canada, First Air, Lufthansa.

Was incorrect saying Southwest works in FS2002, it works in FS9.
