Geneva ATC is insane!!

Postby WebbPA » Thu Oct 30, 2003 9:35 pm

I've tried a couple of flights from Gatwick to Cointrin/Geneva (LSGG) using a high altitude flight plan landing on RWY 5 at LSGG.

ATC scared the snot out of me the first couple of times because they vector me around a mountain just before final and I would swear I'm scraping the treetops.

I tried the same flight in my Beech 350, which is equipped with ground radar and, sure enough, I missed that mountain by about 100 feet.

ATC is eating too much chocolate.

Or maybe there short handed, because everyone is hanging out at the convention.   ::)

I think it has more to do with inaccurate terrain depiction. I gave up trying to fly the ILS at Beckley WV, when flying 98'.  I would fly a "flawless" ILS, and it would show a ground impact everytime. I'm pretty sure some of the same hijinx is occuring in 02' and 04'.
.....so I loaded up the plane and moved to Middle-EEEE..........OIL..that is......

I don't think the FS2002 ATC pays too much attention to real life arrival routes, hence the weird vectoring my friend.

I love to fly in the alps though, great stuff!  ;D

It's a hoot to fly it and they have never slammed me into the ground yet.  I was just wondering how close they really got.  Now I know.  I don't know whether skimming the treetops in a 737 is scarier than in a Beech 350.

FS2002's ATC system doesn't take ground elevation into account, therefore vectoring you into a mountain for landing doesn't seem to bother them ::)

But so far I havn't heard of any problems like this in FS2004 8)

FS2002's ATC system doesn't take ground elevation into account

and that can be frustrating!!! When flying an IFR plan from somewhere in the Alps I now and then get initial climb clearance to say 3000ft - while vectoring me onto mountains are at least 7000ft!
Tough decision...have your flightplan cancelled by ATC (bye bye vectoring for the rest of the flight :() or die on a Swiss mountainside.....

Cheers
