flying around the world

i am just about to compley a flight i took around the world it is quite fun i would sugest it it puts a purpose to your flying

here is what i sugest to do

first you start at your local airport i stongley sugest the closest intl airport
then plot your corse using the flight planner

and continuisley flying frome airport to airport and eventuley making your way around the world its fun and a great way to get aquanted with the atc and several of the aircraft  and ofcorse you cant do it in a day save it every time you land or save in the middle of long trips

dont be shy to make great detors to visite places or things

Just curious:

What aircraft did you use?  Some purists insist on props.

Did you maintain local flight time?  I.e., if you landed at 2:00 am and quit for the day, did you take off at 2:00 a.m. the next time you started?

How long did it take?  How many legs and how long was your average flight?  I have a short attention span and I can only deal with flights of 2 hours or less.

I sort of slowly began doing a RTW flight in the Baron. Having flown from my local airport of Belfast City, EGAC, I went to Birmingham, EGBB. From there I flew up to Inverness via Dundee, and onto the Faroe Islands. The worst part was flying from the Faroe Islands all the way to the east coast of Greenland, where I am right now. I haven't flown much on it recently because my graphics card isn't so fond of FS2004, which I really want to use for it. But I'll resume it and get to the bottom of the States before Christmas!

EDIT: I'm flying in Real Time (none of this speeded up business, and I was using FS Real Time) along with real weather. And I'm hoping to fly the whole thing without autopilot either!

As I write this I am leaving the coast of Indonesia after leaving Kula Lumpur destined for Aryes Rock.

I don't know that I'd want to try it without any autopilot assistance but the Baron is pretty stable.  I have Tipster's "RTW" panel, so what the heck.  If I just save each flight as I land that should keep up with the local time issue.

Most people go east to west so maybe I'll try west to east.  I  live in Florida so I'll go north to New York, to Greenland, to Europe & Asia.  And Africa.  I think one of the conditions of a true RTW flight is that you have to hit every continent (except Antarctica, where there are no default airfields).

I'll give you a report in a year or so.

Why the Baron and not the 350?

I found it.  I've just never flown it before, or minimally, and I'm accustomed to the Baron.

Its just the King Air 350 is faster, I've got the RTW panel on both, not sure if this causes any problems with the 350 as its meant for the Baron.

ps I've just reached the Australian coast in a heavy cloud layer, 30000 ft. 82 nm west of Curtin airport YCIN, I may put down soon as its still 650 nm to Ayres Rock and its so late its early here, BST

Good idea.  The Baron maxes out at 200 k groundspeed and the specs tell me that the 350 will do 315 k.  I can easily add the panel to the 350.

And you're reaching 30,000 ft with it?  The Baron flies like a garbage truck at 20,000 ft.

I found that I have been using a Friendly Panel (http://www.friendlypanels.arrakis.es/) with the 350 so I should probably add the RTW panel to it, fly a couple of flights to get used to it, then go around the world.

I forgot to check, does the 350 have functional landing lights?

30000 ft in the Dessault Falcon (2nd best freeware addon ever, after the Fanda Dash 8 in my opinion) not the Beechcraft.

Landed at Curtin.  Had an engine lose power before deciding to land, restarted easily enough.

If you set an engine to fail does it just switch off rather than fail without any way to restart it? Still, wouldn't fancy that on finals though.

If you're a REAL masochist, try doing it in the Rutan Voyager, one shot!  :o  I had to wait until the wife left town for two weeks.  :)

I added the Baron RTW panel to the 350.  The only problem I can see is that the airspeed indicator is not designed for the 350's speed so it "redlines" but it still works fine.

The 350 has functional landing and taxi lights and it climbs like a bat out of hell. I took it up to only 10,000 feet for a practice run and the best speed I could get was 256 k ground  (after tweaking fuel mixture).  I imagine it will do better at 20,000.

I have custom sound for the Baron so the 350 sounded like a sewing machine.  A little tweak to sound.cfg to alias it to the Baron fixed that.

I have an add on Dash 8-103 (Caribbean Sun)  and I was considering using that or the Cessna Caravan Amphibian.  I'm not masochitsic enough to try the Rutan.  Maybe on my second try.

The reason I'm flying the Baron is that I just like it. It's not terribly fast, but it's a nice plane to look at and to fly. And I've gone without autopilot for all of it because it's teaching me about how to fly a plane. How to trim it, how to use the throttle and the prop and the mix levers properly.

I was originally in the C172 up until Inverness and then I just decided to switch to the Baron. And it's a great plane!
