missing scenery files

Postby Hammer » Sat Aug 09, 2003 2:20 pm

Just about the time I think I've got things going in the right direction at least, something else starts, right now, in FS2002, after selecting a flight, when loading up before taking off, I get error messages about not being able to locate scenery files, buildings, etc might be missing, at last count, I got 17 warnings I had to acknowledge about possible missing files. Also at the top of the screen, a toolbar for shrinking the picture, enlarging same & exiting is there now, wasn't there before. Any body know which of the 3 discs, the scenery files are on & if necessary, can I overwrite the scenery files, Thanks guys.

Hammer,

Based on the description, it appears that you may have installed add-on scenery to fs2002 that is conflicting with the default scenery, such that the default scenery was overwritten in the Scenery Library.

The best way of solving the problem without losing your add-on scenery depends on the following:  Are the error messages occurring when you load a flight in a particular city/airport, or does it happen regardless of the location? ???

That minimize/maximize toolbar sounds like you have inadvertantly unchecked 'full screen' in the 'views' pull-down menu.  To get to that, just hit alt anytime during a flight and pull the menu down.

The error message means you have macros in the scenery that require a library bgl. Chances are they are Nova macros, and you'll need the NovaLib1.bgl which should have been included in the scenery folder of the scenery in question. The best thing to do is get that bgl and drop it in your main scenery folder. Then you'll be covered for all scenerys that use Nova macros. I learned this the hard way as i have used Nova macros in my scenerys and having the NovaLib1.bgl in my main scenery folder, i never get the error message. Unfortunatly, some of those who have installed my scenery dont have it, so they get the error message.

Hammer. It would help to know if this is with just default scenery & which particular airport you're using. It might be a known problem or a messed up database which could be fixed by reinstalling the sim.

If you've installed any 3rd party scenery it's possible you're missing standard 3rd party libraries as TJ points out. Any extra files required should be listed in the Readme instructions with the download. In my experience the most common cause of those error messages is by not installing the Gerrish Gray tree library which is popular with many scenery designers. Gerrish's Trees Library for FS2000/2 Release 3 (trees_v3.zip) here. http://www.simviation.com/fs2002utilities_ess1.htm

Thanks guys for the comebacks, first off, opened views, clicked on full screen & was back in business, regarding the scenery files, I very recently downloaded the Stearman zip from this site, with about 5-6 liveries. The 1st error message appears when loading for a flight. It reads, Scenery library object not found. This may cause some scenery such as some buildings to not display, then gives 4 ID #'s W/(sceneDB\vehicles\vehcles\scenery area scenery\area 118 not found. click OK to continue. Before takeoff repeats itself 11-17 times, stops all action, has occured at 2 airports (cities) to date, (Meigs) Chicago & S.F. Intl (S.F.) with 2 addon A/C, not default, will try default A/C. Have found empty SceneryDB folder in FS2002.Also occured twice in the air. Definitely unfamiliar with Novalib1.bgl. Ran across term bgl before, have to plead ignorance, same with Gerrish's grey Tree, will check Readme file again.1st error message appears before A/C is picked out. Thanks agains guys, hate to have to re-install, lost my logbook last time. Does it ever get to be smooth flying?  Hammer ??? :-[

Hammer. I wouldn't expect this problem with addon aircraft (unless scenery files were included with the package). The fact you have the error messages at Meigs & SF makes this highly unlikely.

Have found empty SceneryDB folder in FS2002.

This might be the cause of your problem. The FS2002\SCENEDB folder should not be empty from a typical install. Are you running FS2002 off a Minimal install - or maybe chose not to install all scenery areas to your HD? If so, make sure you have the correct CD in the drive.

PS.
Also at the top of the screen, a toolbar for shrinking the picture, enlarging same & exiting is there now, wasn't there before.

Hit Alt + Enter to toggle between Windows (with Menu Bar) & Full Screen mode. Alt will bring up the Menu Bar when running in Full Screen mode.

Hagar,

I'm running a full install. I ran a couple of flights with default A/C this afternoon, no problems, at Chicago MDW & Williams Gateway in Phoenix. I've got a feeling I goofed the installation of the Stearman 450. I'm going to go over it & see if I can't get it straightened out. The trouble I've had seems to be with the Stearman & a Spitfire XIV & the quasi addon, The Vought Corsair. Hope I won't be confined go just using the default A/C.

Well Hammer, I can't imagine what could be causing your problem. I've installed literally 100s of aircraft to all M$ sims to check them out. I don't remember getting a scenery error message with a single aircraft.  ???

If your FS2002\SCENEDB folder is empty there are 2 possibilties.
1. There was a problem during install of FS2002.
2. You deleted the contents by accident.
I suggest an Uninstall/Install of FS2002 might be the best way to fix it.

PS. If you did a Full install the sim will run happily without a CD in the drive.

I checked in the utilities & found a Novav1.6 for FS2002/FS2000/CFS2, by Rafael Garcia Sanchez, is that the one you had reference to (NovaLib1.bgl) or where can I find that NovaLib1.bgl? ???. I downloaded the Stearman PT17 Kaydet from Simviation 2002 Vintage A/C & can't seem to locate anything on changes regarding the scenery. Thanks

I've never seen NovaLib1.bgl either. You wouldn't need it unless you installed scenery requiring it. I think this is confusing the issue here. Please confirm if you installed any 3rd party scenery.

No, I haven't loaded any 3rd party scenery. Went back over the "read me" for the Stearman Kaydet, nothing unusal there, no scenery downloads. I'm earnestly trying to avoid a uninstall/install, I always have trouble, last time my Roxio5 creator wouldn't copy my addons. I have FS2002 on a spare machine, but can't figure out how to copy the scenery files to my main FS2002. "X" advised someone else to rename FS2002, install a 2nd FS2002, & I guess drag & drop the required files or folders & then again rename FS2002 back. Hope I got it right, my court of last resort.

If you don't have any 3rd party scenery a simple Uninstall/Install should do it. Insert CD-1 & select Unimstall. Then install to the same path as before. You shouldn't lose any 3rd party aircraft, only repaints of the defaults.

If you're nervous the duplicate install X suggested might be the best method. Rename the FS2002 folder to any other name. Insert CD - 1 & install in the usual way. There's no need to rename the new FS2002 folder. Simply paste your addons into it. You can safely delete the old original FS2002 directory folder when it's done.

Hagar,

I have FS2002 on my desktop, changed the name & inserted the 1st disk, instead of starting an install, I got the welcome screen for FS2002. Only had time for one attempt late last night. I must have really flunked Computer Basic 101, will continue working on the problem. AT least from reading in the forum, I'm not the only one that has difficulty. Some times computers seem to have a mind of their own. I'm going to try & back up my 3rd party addons & if worst come to worst, I'll have to do a full uninstall & reinstall. Thanks much for your advice, it certainly helped point me in the right direction :)

Hammer. The FS2002 icon on your desktop is a shortcut. It would make no dfference renaming it. You need to rename the FS2002 root directory folder itself. This the the folder you install your addons to. The default location is C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\FS2002.

PS. Rename the folder to FS2002 Old or similar. Any name will do as long as it's different.
