Taxiway Markers & Lights

Postby driver_guy » Wed Jul 23, 2003 8:56 am

Hey fellow pilots...

I run a very stock version of FS2002, which is to say that I have not downloaded many things to update it.  That being said, here are my problems:

1.  No matter how high I run my scenery, I still cannot get my game to display any taxiway markers (i.e. taxiway Alpha, Bravo, etc.).  Therefore, I always have to use a "Progressive Taxi", and that sucks.

2.  When I fly at night, my Taxi and Landing Lights aren't visible out of the cockpit view, however when I change to an outside view the plane the lights are visible...Can I fix that?

Thanks in advance for the help...Driver_Guy

Welcome to SimV Driver.
Right with taxiway markers the standard airports do not to have them. A number of downloadable freeware ones do however.
Also lights will only be visible from a cockpit if the aircraft is a gmax model.

Ozzy on the money again

The only taxi way markings I've found so far are for San Franciso.  To avoid being walked by the hand around airfields you're only other option is to download the taxi way diagrams and have them sat next to you, and hope you don't lose your bearings.  Thats ok for simpler airfields but still a maze on bigger airports.
Lets hope M$ have made more of an effort in the next addition.

Good luck

Thanks for the help, guys.

One question, What is a GMAX Model?  If it's too complicated to explain, just tell me not to worry about it...lol.

I'm with you, Phil I hope that in the upcoming FS's, they will pay a little more attention to the airport markings.

gmax is a design program that came with the PRO version of 2002 and is used to design plane models and various other things? its rather complicated to use or was when i tried:)
and ACOF will have taxiway signs at all?? airports so no worry this time, and apparently progressive taxi is an option to just switch on and off no need to make a full radio call

Sorry to keep asking questions, but...

What is ACOF?  Can you tell that I've been out of the loop?

Thanks for all of your help, guys.  In the meantime, I'll work on some really intelligent questions to ask.

ACOF, or CoF, is the next release of F$, which is due out very soon.

It's basically an easier way of typing Micro$oft Flight Simulator 2004: A Century of Flight.

Hope this helps.
Great edit, Bob.

In response to the 1st question on taxiway markers. If you download the Stansted (EGSS), you will see not only the markers, but the "wig-wag" lights at R/W  and the gate numbers which will also tell you if you are on the dot or too far etc. In my estimation, it's the best there is, that's if you can tolerate the whole airport being 100' south of where it should be! Which makes the ILS an impossibility! There's also some good ones done for Vancouver, Victoria BC and Seattle. :(

I've tried that stanstead scenery. The one I got was for 2000. not good for 2002... it was all jumpy and whatnot. Anyways... I've noticed you can't see the planes shadow from any views inside your airplane, I doubt thats doable

Hi Driver.  Welcome.

There are some add on taxiway signs that you can find by doing a Google search or maybe a search here for that particular term.

There is a company that has payware ones called taxiwaysigns.com.  But their website now has password access just to get onto even the homepage let alone do downloads.  Not sure what is up with that.

They have apparently releasesd a few of their airport sign packages into the freeware market.  I think I have found about four of them.  One is KJFK (Kennedy in NY).  Can't remember the others.  They are VERY helpful.

Also, if you have a real GA airport (general aviation) near you.... they might have a pilots shop of some sort there.  You should be able to get a little booklet or loose sheet package there that is called "US Terminal Procedures".  They are sold by sections....and there are a LOT of them to cover the whole USA......23 I think.  For example the Northeast #1 version that I have only covers ME, NH, VT, MA, CT, and RI.  Get one for the local area(s) that you fly a lot.

They have all of the airport information about nav and tower and approach and control frequencies, approach patterns, go around pattern, runway stats, flt level / noise abatement restrictions, patterns, ILS, and taxiway designators, and so on.  These are the things that the real world pilots use.  They get reissued continually.... so you might be able to get outdated ones either REAL cheap... or free.  If you know a GA pilot.... they will have old ones.  New they are cheap..... I think I paid about $4.00 for a new one.

Have fun....... bot the sim and the forum here are fun.

best,

..................john

Jess, you should try the Stansted scenery for 2k2, it's completely different, heavy on frame rates, sure, but very well done. If you are searching, make sure the spelling is "Stansted" and follow the instructions on the readme file to install. 8)
