taxiing in a corsair?

Postby deuce » Sun Jul 20, 2003 7:26 pm

well ive been playing and playing and playing on realism:hard trying to learn this stuff. after several failed attempts..  (gear up landing, not knowing how to stop landing, too steep noseplant landing) i managed to land it right this time at new orleans international.

as i continue down the runway i veer off to the right into the grass.. this seems a little odd to me.

now whenever i power up to taxi all i can do is go straight.. when i power down the aircraft does a spin-o-rama in place.

am i doing something wrong or is this plane just messed up?

First; do you have a twist joystick?
If not you must have auto rudder on!!
If you have a twist joystick go to settings
and turn down the sensitive on the rudder
to about 50% and 0 null!!

Because of the limited view it is best to
taxi in spot plane view behind and just above the
plane!!

Let me know!!

The Corsair is a bear to taxy in RL. I remember Gregory Boyington's (Black Sheep Squadron)  book about flying them in WWII. What the pilots did was crank the seat up as far as it would go and then weave back and forth to see past the nose first one side then the other.

I find the realism settings a little too sensative when maxed out. I've flown a Cessna in RL and the closest I've found to real world flight characteristics is keeping the realism settings down just a hair from max. Of course any military plane is even harder to handle than a GA airplane so overly sensative realism settings and a plane prone to being hard to handle equals an almost impossible situation. Find what settings seem right to you and if you want you can ease them up a little at a time as you get used to the sim. Remember it is a simulator and not a real plane. There's bound to be some differences.

Matt's on the right track. In real life you would S-turn while taxiing. Not very practical in Sim life though. Like Matt said, the pilots would adjust the seat height to it's maximum height.......same goes for the sim. I've found that if you raise the seat height (shift/enter)on the taildraggers, it allows you
to taxi from the cockpit, as opposed to spot view.

.....so I loaded up the plane and moved to Middle-EEEE..........OIL..that is......

You can also keep an eye on the edge of the runway as you're rolling. This also requires a bit of practice with aircraft control so you can correct any drift without slewing on and off the runway. :)
White on White fly all night.

Red on White you're alright.

Red on Red you'll soon be dead.

I have found in the Corsair that if you go to virtual cockpit and hit the - (minus Key) so you are sitting way back, hit the key about three times, you can see both sides of the run way pretty good,  full power on and when the tail lifts up and the plane is on the front gear swith back to cockpit view so you can see the guages better and hit rotation speed ,,, off you go.
