How do you take exterior landing pictures?

Postby JBaymore » Fri Jul 04, 2003 2:04 pm

OK.... color me dumb.  ;)

I see these GREAT screenshots of 747's and A-300's and so on doing touchdowns from really great photographic angles....... tires puffing smoke, great backgrounds, and so on.

How the heck do you DO that????????

I am too busy flying the sircraft from in the cockpit at that point to switch views to the exterior and hit a hot key.  Maybe I am just a poor pilot  :P.

WHAT am I missing here  ???  ???  ???

best,

After you've landed, pause the sim and use the instant replay feature.  Then take your screenshot and live happily ever after!   ;D

That's the way i do it.
Pause the sim after landing. Go to Spot Plane View, and scan around looking for the best shots. When you find it, press the Print Scrn button on your keyboard. Sometimes it's Shift+Print Scrn, depending. Minumize the sim and open whatever paint program you use and start a new picture, (800x600). Open it and go to your clipboard and paste the image to your new project, and size it as needed.
Super easy. ;)

The only problem with this approach is that if there are any AI aircraft nearby they disappear in Instant Replay.

If you want to keep them in the picture the only way to do it is to keep pausing during the landing and hit S to get into spot view to check out the pic, take it, unpause and so on.

Obviously this will probably mess up your landing - but it's pics you're after, right?

Do the landing again after if you want!

747's,A300's etc like you mention are the easy one's because you're normally on the ILS with them so they pretty much fly themselves down-the trick is to get down in one piece in the GA aircraft that you are flying on the visual approaches.lol.Pausing is probably the best option for the pic's.

Hi

I don't know if you have Paintshop pro or similar, but you can have it running at the same time as your F.S. and use its screen capture facility. :D

Thanks to ALL for the information.

I KNEW that there had to be something pretty simple  ;).

Tried it last night and now understand how it works.

How do you extend the time of the instant replay beyond 60 seconds?  I tried but it seemed to cause it to glitch.

best,

How do you take exterior landing pictures?

Gee I hope I'm not too late with my method.........first, I make sure the "Seat Belt" warning light is off, then I undo it and proceed to the exit nearest the wing root. I then pop it open with trusty disposable camera in hand and begin my sojourn to the wingtip and start shooting, making sure not to drop the camera........the ones from behind are a bit trickier as they require you to hang on to a rope with one hand and shoot with the other when you happen to face the correct way in the turbulent air behind a big jet with the flaps and gear down.  Still workin on developin' a way to get some shots from in front, without gettin' bowled over by my subject.........

Simple, although it does require a bit of timing.  Place a giant rubber band between each wingtip.  Stretch it all the way back to the tail and place yourself in it facing backwards.  Let go of the tail and off you go!  Just be ready to get the pic because you only get one chance!  After you're done, climb back up the rope you used for rear shots and go on your way.. ;D ;D

If you've got strong enough calves, you might be able to run the length of the fuselage, from tail to nose, then at the nosecone, leap off, do a mid-air twist, take the shot, then land back on top of the fuselage (I'm thinking near row 18 or so, depending on type) as it passes back beneath you.
Great edit, Bob.
