Conflicting Air Speed Indicator, (ASI), readings..

Postby Fozzer » Tue May 20, 2003 12:51 pm

Have you noticed that when observing your air speed indicator in the cockpit view, then swopping over to the default, 6 instrument view, (with the "W" key), for a better view of the runway ahead, that the two readings are different, sometimes as much as 20-40 knots difference....?
(The cockpit view readings are generally the higher of the two).

This raises problems in trying to calculate the real stall speed when flaring out for a landing... :o....!!

(Note: when flying prop planes with conventional  analogue instruments).

...any comments...?

(Note that both sets of instruments are reading true air speed in knots)...?

Cheers all...
Paul.

Fozzer. Which panels have you tried this with? If they're 3rd party panels I suspect the ASI gauge itself is a tad innacurate. The default gauges on the mini panel (& default panels) should be correct.

Hi Hagar....
Thanks for the tip.
Actually all my planes are 3rd. party small prop planes, so that accounts for it...
I wonder why the designers don't match the 3rd. party/default instruments up together?
I wonder which I should rely on for accuracy, regarding stall speeds, my 3rd. party plane's gauge or the default 6 gauge layout..?

Cheers Doug... ;D...!

Well Paul, as I mentioned the defaults should be accurate. Hit Shift + Z to compare them with the onscreen readout. I'm not sure offhand if this is IAS or TAS.  ::)
