Maybe check out what type of cards are being put into hi end machines. For example
www.alienware.com make computers geared towards gaming. See what type of cards they are using and the mother board it is going into. I found out the hard way, I bought a 128mb card that fit a 4x slot. But I didn't have a 4x slot. The card fit fine, it is just if I had the 4x agp slot, I would get better performance for the card. It is basically like having a beefy 64mb card. So what ever card you by make sure you are going to get the max amount of performance possible, because you are paying for it. Motherboard compatibility, etc.
