De-Frag (Improvement/FS2K2)

Postby Splash » Tue Apr 22, 2003 1:37 pm

;DI completed a de-frag this aftenoon and could not believe the diff it made in my FS and the frame rate, it improved most noticeably.  I have become quite negligent in doing de-frags, which I faithfully did once, but download multi-numerous things and need to do it more often.  Guess I am going to have to get back to a routine, because my game was really slowing down and frame rates dropping, and tomorrow I go for more RAM as well.  Would a defrag make such a diff in the game? I guess so ;D ;D ;D

I'm sure it does, it helps the flight simulator codes or something like that, just makes everything run smoother since all the stuff on the hard drive would be in a descent order, and the computer would be able to read it off the hard drive faster or something like that.

Defrags are one of the best things you can do for your computer.  Besides being healthy for flight sim, you should see an increase in performance all around....

I performed one about a month ago, and it is becoming time to do it again.  It is amazing how many addons you can come up with in a month.....

Definitely agree - although I am not good at remembering to do it. WinXP tells you if you need to do it, which doesn't encourage you to remember, but with today's 100gB hard drives it's worth doing. I edit video a lot, so the drive certainly gets 'fragged'. Even with the 100gB drive, it only takes less than 2 hours. All I need to achieve now is being able to get the kids off the Instant Messenger long enough to be able to do it!

Isn't is terrible when you want to fly, and the kids are doing what they could be doing on the phone...?

I should defrag more often but it takes a long time to do, even with a 7200rpm hard drive.

Another bit of info that helps with any program you install, especially games.

Do a Scan Disk and then Defrag BEFORE installing any program. Put all your files in order before you install a new game and you eleminate many a problems.

Got any slow running/choppy games where you see the hard drive light flickering? Uninstall the game and perform the actions as noted above. Really straightened out a coupel of mine.  ;D

if you defrag regularly the time it takes will; be shorter than when you do it once a month or so

What a defrag does, basiclly, is arrange related files in the same areas on your hard disc to reduce the time it takes to access those files, so it doesn't have to work too hard to find them.

Kind of like on a insturment panel. All of the AP controls are in one place, the Throttle Quadrant is in one place, and the light switches, and soforth, for easy access to that system.

I agree with most panels, except for the Captain Sim 727.  That thing has buttons and switches scattered all over the place....
