Graphics problems!
My system has just started to develop new problem, which to be fair isn't just with fs2002.
During flight/ play, screen goes black, mouse pointer still on screen but then system locks solid and has to be rebooted.Sometimes sound still there!
I have win 98SE and geforce 4600 graphics card. I have run full virus scan with Norton.....no trace. this problem has just begun......any ideas please?

You wouldn't have a Dell system, would you?

I was having a similar problem with mine. (Dell Dimension 4100). In my case, it was mainly a memory problem. I added some more memory and it stopped. Also, try a weekly Defrag and Scan Disk, just to keep everything neat.

Another common cause of this problem is overheating.

I you don't have motherboard temperature monitoring software (the board will come with it if has the sensors to use it) try running the P.C. with the side of the case off and see if the problem persists.

This isn't recommended for normal use btw.

If it does solve the problem, check all your fans are clean and spinning ok and clear all the vents with a toothbrush. They rapidly get clogged up if you don't clean them out.

No it's not a dell....I'll try the defrag/scandisk though.
I checked temperature after lock up...it was fine.
All very strange, only started after computer was turned off for a week!Nothing new added to system, hardware or software.
Could it be a problem with graphics card...overheating maybe. I haven't played with settings for overclocking etc.

Some of the high-end Vid cards do have their own fans, similar to those found on processors.

Tipster's right. You'd be suprised how much dust builds up on all the vent holes and fans/grills and inside the case, just sitting there running.
A good careful vacuuming helps a great deal.

Assuming that graphics card has a fan (I don't know but I suspect it will have) I'd whip the case off and check that it's ok. Make sure it spins freely when powered up and that with the power off, there's no dust or muck in the mechanism.

If your P.C. was off for a week, it could well be that dust and moisture have had the opportunity to solidify into a kind of sticky gell that would severly impede it's ability to rotate.

What kind of PSU have you got as it may not be powerful enough to run the ti4600 and that could cause the computer to lock up.

It's a 400 watt PSU....I have cleaned out fan on vid card...seems to be(fingers crossed) working!
Much obligo to all for hints and ideas.
