Taxi Speed

Postby cwloew » Tue Apr 15, 2003 8:23 pm

Last question for the week.

What is the prefered speed on taxi ways?

I haven't found the answer anywhere else, so I came "home" to get the truth.

I can't speak for real life as I'm not a pilot, but I tend to use 15-20 knots when on a long taxiway with no other traffic, and 5-10 knots when negotiating tight turns and approaching buildings and parking.

long distance taxi (10,000ft + or -)is sometimes carried as high as 60 kts but you still need to slow for the turns at the end......it is discretionary for the pilot, but don't go crazy.....

Fast enough that you don't bug the guy taxing behind you and slow enough you don't dent someone else's plane is the way my flight instructor explained it. Usually around 5 to 30 kts in GA aircraft depending on the wind direction and speed and how busy the taxi ways are.

I sure hope rifleman didn't taxi at 60 kts in a Cessna.  ;D ;D :o

I once took off on a taxiway and flew to the end of the runway.  ATC were very annoyed LOL.

I have been told that a fast walking pace is expected but as MattNW points out there are other factors involved. Besides which if some of these guys are taxiing at a fast walking pace I've got 6 foot legs :)
White on White fly all night.

Red on White you're alright.

Red on Red you'll soon be dead.

My flying club at Southend is right next to a taxi way which runs parallel to a long access road. This lets me chase anything that's taxiing on my Suzuki and they all tend to do about 30mph, so about 25 knots. Given the variety of planes we get (everything from Cessnas to 757s) the taxi speed seems quite uniform.

I usually go full throttle.  When I start to take off, or get unstable, I back it off a bit.  I don't mind the taxi way, I'm just impatiant when it takes me 10 minutes to get to the runway.  I'll even take it to the grass to pass another plane.

WOW  :o... everything from 60 to Walking speed ..>LOL  ;D

I guess then I'm alright when I set the Auto Throttle to 13 KIAS.  I've been passed on the paralell taxi way by an AI plane, maybe twice, but my Engines for some reason wouldn't throtle up properly at those times.

And without AI chatter, I have no clue how upset the Guys and gals behind me were.  They never sounded their horns ...(small attempt at humor)  ::)
