Just bought FS2002...

Postby Kevin Ryan » Wed Mar 19, 2003 3:25 pm

I just bought FS 2002 last night (I have been without a computer for about a year now) and while overall I am extremely pleased, I do have several comments.

I was delighted to find the Corsair in the lineup.  However, upon trying to fly the thing I was treated to a screen flashing white and then normal.  Obviously a video card issue if I had one (see my system specs below).  This happened several times until I adjusted the resolution on the screen, but currently that's the only fix I have.  It has happened mainly on several freeware planes and the Corsair, which  is obviously a CFS2 transplant.

I'm not too sure the scenery is as good as it could be either.  Would one of you nice people with a good video card post a screenshot or two of some of the generic scenery and buildings so I could compare?

Does anyone know how to alter the freeware planes so they appear under a manufacturers name instead of 'Unidentified'?

And lastly, I got up this morning and fired up the sim.  I programmed a trip from Palwaukee airport in the Chicago area to Logan in Boston.  I spent all day on this flight, used the ATC the whole way, from VOR to VOR, came up on Logan just as I planned and slightly ahead of schedule.  I contacted Logan on the approach, was waiting for the reply, and the game crashed.  Needless to say, after the things I said, my 15 month old twins looked at me like I was nuts.

Does anyone here know how I can change the amount of shared memory my computer uses?  Don't ask why I don't have a video card, it's a long story.

But it's definitely a keeper!

Hi Kevin,

I could post a screenshot but to be honest, there's no need. It will look different.

To run FS2002 successfully, you really have to have a videa card, and a half decent one at that.

The rest of your system specs look impressive but the performance of your whole machine will currently be emulating something like a 1ghz if that because of all the graphics processing your chip is having to do.

I'd be interested to know what chip/card runs your sound too. Either that or the graphics siutation will almost certainly account for your crash.

Sounds like to me you got a great computer there  ;D But you need to throw out that video card and go to COMPUSA or a computer auction and purchase yourself a 64mb or better video card. ;D

Another thing is you can't be running programs in the background while playing FS2k2. (Like downloading files from the internet). That slows down your machine and it takes resources that your sim needs to operate properly. Recently today I realized my atc was echoing while in flight and I was downloading files in the background.

In short your computers memory and processor needs to be focused on only running FS2k2 and nothing else. Long flights like that might cause the computer to crash because your machine is getting too hot. Is your computer in an area where there is plenty of room behind it to get circulation of in and out of the tower.

I can't help you with your other issues with add on aircrafts. i am sure there is someone here that can though! This is a network of simmers that help one another out !  ;)
Its only in your mind, strong mind, strong soul and nobody can take that from you!

I would be interested in the answer to this one as well. Thanks ahead of time.
