Introduction

Hi folks,

I just found this forum after having had a less than good experience on a so-called 'official' MS flight sim forum.

Anyway, my name's Beery.  Some of the combat flight sim fans may know me from my work producing unofficial patches for Red Baron 2/3D, while others may know me through my work on other games such as the Battleground series of military simulations, B-17 II, etc.

I just picked up FS2002 last week.  This is the first time I've picked up a MS Flight Simulator game since the early 1990s.  It's a great leap forward, and I'm hoping to get a lot out of the game, and maybe I'll end up helping to create some good unofficial add-ons for it.  Certainly there's plenty of airport add-ons, but I think there's a lack of scenery (famous buildings etc.) that could be addressed.

Anyway, it is always good to see people taking an interest in this hobby and excited to add to the contuing effort to make the game bigger and better.

I've been attending this forum for only a couple of months or so, but I recently posted a message to the effect that it's the friendliest and most civilised FlightSim forum I've ever been to.

You'll get a nice rest from the flame wars and I'm sure you'll be a great addition to the wealth of knowledge here.

Hey, I just took a quick look at your round the world flight.  I'm doing a similar flight (Northern hemisphere, from Boston, MA, West to East, using a Cessna 182), though not published on the web.  I too flew through Nuuk and Keflavik.  We might have passed each other .

Right now I'm on the homeward leg, and the most scary bit.  Not many airfields between Japan and Alaska, and I have to make sure the wind is with me if I want to make it.  After that it's plain sailing all the way home.

So far I've only had one accident.  I'd flown IFR to Nuuk (I think it was Nuuk - somewhere around there anyway - perhaps it was in Newfoundland), and as I was getting ready for the approach, the ATC folks kept me buggering around for so long that I ran out of fuel and had to make a forced landing in a field - I damaged the port wing on a tree.  I wish it was possible to declare fuel emergencies in this game.

I've had a similar experince in my first (abhorted) attempt at an RTW flight. I landed at Logans airport with 1% fuel left - not nice! LOL

It wouldn't have been Nuuk you were at btw - it has no tower - Uni-comm only. It's also a sod if the weather means restricted vision as, if I remember rightly, it's an offset ILS.

Hi Beery, I agree with Tipster, this is a great site.  I tried most of them and ended up staying here.  If you were here in Newfoundland, I must have seen you.  There's only St John's, Gander, Stephenville and Deer Lake with towers - must have been one of those places.  But (No Duff) there was a cessna crashed in a bog just a few miles from here about a month ago, landed upside down (pilot unhurt - walked away).  Wasnt you was it?  lol  This is a stopover/refuelling point for aircraft being ferried to Europe and we usually have a number of crashes during the winter months.  And ya dont get just beer down here ya get "Screeched" as well!!!  lol

That sounds familiar.

A week or so ago when I flew my B-17 from San Francisco to Pearl Harbour, I landed with barely 2% of fuel left! I didn't use any built in maps and no GPS. I also used Real-world Weather. It took almost 14 hours!
