Not a junkie, but I'll watch the Triple Crown. Lot of horse country where I live.

Me too. I live around Saratoga, NY, which is the site of the nation'a oldest organized race course (not to mention it's the oldest organized sporting venue of any kind in the US). I also have the Saratoga Harness Track near by, so I'm surrounded.

Never really pay attention to the Aussie Tracks, although I have seen them while flipping to the OTB channel late a night.  ;)

Used to go to the horses every now & then years ago with a lady friend, it's kinda neat, never won anything tho.

Back in the 50's there was a major racetrack within walking distance of us, of course being underage, we couldn't go in, it's now a park, but the grandstand is still there.

Looking forward to the day when horse racing and rodeos are no longer permitted.

If the horse (or other 'farm animal')has to be put down, so should the jockey (or rider).

Race horses are well taken care of.  Take a close look, you'll see they're all in top shape, well fed, well groomed, and properly exercised.

It's pretty effortless for them to run a race, and they don't run more than one in any given day.

Don't know anything about rodeos, so can't comment.

Thanks for the input, B-Valvs, good to know.

We've had horses boarded around here in the past, the neighbor on the corner has a vacant backyard, they had two horses there for awhile, really nice animals, quiet, fenced in by a white horizontal type wood fence so you could easily see them.

Long ago, the people who lived straight across the street had a horse, not fenced in, it would sometimes wander into my front yard and munch on the grass.

And on rare occasions someone comes through riding a horse.

That was about 1965ish, I think they've tightened up the ordinances by now.  It was kinda comical, tho, to see it practically at your front door quietly munching away.  Only happened maybe 2-3 times.  I would always tell them their horse got loose, they'd come and get it.  I think the neighbors got it for their kids.

Now that I think about it, a friend of mine had a mini-pony, or whatever they're called, for awhile a few years ago, but he lives pretty much in an area that accomodates that sort of thing.  Another really nice animal.
