Avatar on DVD - Killer experience or experience killer?

I saw James Cameron's Avatar a while back and it is now in the shops for DVD and Blu-ray purchase. Is anyone going to buy the for-home edition or is it going to be a really big flop just simply because the cinema experience was so mesmerizing?

I am stuck in the space between buying it now or perhaps waiting until I can play Blu-ray and then buy it later. Sorry to go with the crowd, but the film was simply incredible but some people I've spoken to are unlikely to get the DVD because it won't be as good. I don't think I've ever heard people using that response. DVD quality, even Blu-ray, can be said to be worse than cinema quality but often you just ignore that and buy them. I don't think any sort of current definition would do the film justice. Apparently it doesn't even come out in 3D format

I already watched Avatar on Blue-Ray-DVD - it's nice like everything that comes on blue-ray, though I guess it's not the same like in cinema (though I haven't seen Avatar in cinema).

I watched 'I'm legend' in cinema and was quite disappointed when I watched it at home again (though it wasn't a blue-ray-DVD)...

I never saw Avatar in the cinema but I do have it on DVD. Ok, it's not in 3D but it's a great movie.

I watched Final destination 4 3D on TV the other week. It was out of curiosity, I have not seen a 3D movie since it was tested on TV in 1983 I believe (watched it at school). All I can say, if that is what is on offer then I will be the last in the world to have 3D at home. It was rubbish and I should have given the DVD rental money to the homeless guy outside the shop instead. I am sure the cheap bottle of red he would have bought would have given him a far better 3D effect

I bought the BlueRay and watched it.

I watched it once, at the theatre in 3d, to catch the cool graphics. Was impressive.

The story on the other hand...

Its Ferngully with out the kids songs.

As the others have said, nice eye candy...unoriginal story.

I don't think you're going to get a lot of replay value out of it in any case...so for what it's worth, I would try to catch it in a theatre then leave it at that.

I'm the same, just watched it for the first time over he weekend, it probably was good I didn't see it in 3D, that way I didn't have quite as much awesomeness to compare it too It's the kind of movie I will watch again, which means I thought it was pretty good! I probably enjoyed as much for the digital effects as anything else though...

I simply refuse to watch Avatar.  If I see that blue guy in an ad one more time I might scream.  I have simply gotten tired of video game graphic movies.  IMO, movie special effects have gone downhill, with way too much emphasis on computers and graphic design.  All you have to do is compare the old and new Star Wars, and see which one looks more real.

Didn't see it in theaters, but bought it the other day cause I had a $20 BestBuy rewards thingie to use up.

Best dang CG I've ever seen in a flick!!! 

I highly recommend it.  But I liked 2012 also.

BTW, the new Star Wars beats the tar outta the old SW, IMHO........I have one of the orginal issue DVDs of all 3 "old" SW.....there are noticeably apparent "boxes" that surround the cut&pasted spacecraft in the old SWs.
