Movies that stop me in my tracks . . .

Postby Xyn_Air » Sat Mar 29, 2008 2:58 am

I am particular about movies.  Then again, we all have our preferences.  Still, a lot of cinema is forgettable to me, and some of what isn't forgettable I really wish was (why oh why did I ever have to see "Grifters"?).  Still, and fortunately, there is a a lot of great cinema out there that can stir my emotions and give me pause for thought.

Today, I was watching clips from "Goodfellas."  That movie just makes my blood turn chill.  You know, it doesn't matter if real mafioso are as dapper or quick-witted.  It doesn't matter if their lives come with a catchy soundtrack or not.  What hit me was the fact that, yes, there are people out there who kill and kill again for profit, amusement, and revenge over an insult.

What would I do in the face of such cold-blooded ruthlessness?  What can push a person so far down that road that a life of un-ending violence and corruption become normal and even desirable?  These are some sobering thoughts that go through my mind as I watch that tragic tale unfold.

I am also filled with a sense of gratitude for the relatively peaceful life I now lead.  I am glad that my life has been one mostly characterized by safety and sanity (with only a few notable exceptions).  And, really, I think I get a desire to be a calm and compassionate person, because the opposite as portrayed in this film seems so desperate and sad.

So, what movies move you?  What really stirs up the thoughts and emotions for you?  More than just enjoying the story, what film or films have caused you to examine life and yourself?

There are two things in life...

Reality...

...and...

Illusion...;)...!

"Reality" is what happens / I create for myself...

"Illusion", are Films you watch on TV, and in the Cinema, and should not affect your way of life in any way...

They are produced just for general entertainment/annoyance for the masses...and nothing else...Trust me...;)...!

One of my favourite films is "Fargo", (by the Cohen Brothers), illustrating a way of disposing with an annoying Toe-Rag, involving a Wood-Chipper Machine....
...but that's just just a suggestion...not to be taken too literally...(probably)...;)...!

I never get influenced in any way by "Films"...
..they generally send me to sleep, half way through...;)...!

Paul...Living the the "Real World".... ;D...!

One of the big advantages of growing "Older", is that you get less gullible, and suddenly see "The Light", and cease to be influenced by the "Media"...;)...!
.... ;D....!

Not a movie but a TV comedy series of all things. The final scene of the last episode of Blackadder Goes Forth. The most powerful & moving piece of television I've ever seen. Watch the clip right to the end if you haven't seen it before. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z3V698JzqC0

Next you'll be telling us there's no such street in Manchester called Coronation Street.

I ask you...  ;)  ;D  ;D

I expect there's just as many people watching those daft programmes without buying licences that also believe it's real. :P

Maybe sometimes we all need to be a little more "daft" . . . it's not about whether the story is real or not.  It is about all the what if's of human nature.  It is about all that is great and terrible in being human.

There is nothing wrong with being moved to ponder in the mind and feel in the heart, whether this comes because of a movie, the view as we soar across the sky, or simply from seeing our loved ones.

But if it is daft and wrong . . . I rather that than all your wisdom.
