Recommend a Good Piece

Can anyone recommend a good piece of classical music to play on the Violin? I need a very technical piece but not complicated on the listener. I need to play something at a concert next year and my teacher wants me to show off my skills.


I wouldn't mind anyone from the Baroque period or Classical.

My skills: 3.5 years of playing the violin. Just give it to me and I'll figure it out.

I am not so sure. I just need the piece and I'll see if I could play it. But don't give me something like Paganini. LOL  ;D

Have a listen to some of the examples played there, and see if you think you think you can manage one of them.

ummmm...I dont know your standard but...

Mendelssohn Violin Concerto...but you really need a full orchestra for it

I guess you're about the same standard as me ( 5 years playing violin.....but not very seriously;)) so that would be a no....

Going on what I can play...

You said classic / Baroque, but heres a variety

Con Affeto - Giovanni Degli Antoni     (romantic)

anything from This Book by Shostakovich

I forget which country you're in (I suspect USA)....but here in britain we have graded exams, where grade 1 is beginner to grade 8 which is pretty good

I would recommend any of the books as they contain a good variety of pieces...

For your standard Grades 4 and 5 are probably the most appropriate (I'm G5)

well their is always Nirvana - Smells like Teen Spirit, ive seen that done by a orchestra before now and it had vilins in..

Bach.  Bach.  Bach.   There are movements in the 'Six Sonatas & Partitas for Unaccompanied Violin' that are short enough, and very melodic.   As a violinist, this music should be a necessary part of your studies, if not now, then eventually.  They are somewhat enough, but not lost on any listener.  The E major Partita is a favorite and a good example, with some shortish movements that really rock melodic.  

Bach also composed 'Six Suites for Unaccompanied Cello', again, great stuff, but in bass clef.  

Your teacher will know of these, and of course, others that have been mentioned in these posts.

Thanks all. I have made a decision to go with Vivaldi. I really like Vivaldi just as Bach but I'll play Bach next time.

Oops, I forgot about good ol' Antonio!  Good choice, good luck, I'm sure it'll turn out great!  I worked over some Vivaldi last year in prep for a guitar/keyboard duet thingie, nice & bright music.  Far out!!
