Favorite song lyrics

Postby Chris_F » Sat Oct 14, 2006 7:22 am

So, does anyone have some favorite song lyrics?  Something that's particularly meaningful or something that perfectly captures a mood?  Here are some that stand out for me:

"You can sell your soul.  But you can't buy it back" - Ben Harper

"As long as the day is full of time there will always be room for your hand in mine."  - Brandi Carlisle

Deserving particular merit are Josh Ritter and Bob Dylan who write such well crafted lyrics that they don't stand alone as well as they do in the context of their whole song, but here are some favorites:

This is a fun one from a song about being a S&M person's lover:

"I know the sound of the handcuffs as they scrape across the floor but that new thing you've got I've got no clue what it's for".  - Josh Ritter

"I'm not sayin that you treated me unkind.  You could've done better but I don't mind.  You just kinda wasted all my precous time.  Don't think twice, it's all right." - Bob Dylan.

So, does anyone else have a favorite song lyric or two?

Pink Floyd's Mother, in it's entirety.
It just so happens to also be my favourite song.

I won't bore you with the whole song, here's a snippet.

The juice of the carrot, the smile of the parrot
A little drop of claret - anything that rocks
Elvis and Scotty, days when I ain't spotty,
Sitting on the potty - curing smallpox
;D

Ian Dury & The Blockheads - Reasons To Be Cheerful part 3.
A much missed poetic genius.

[center]You can leave it all behind
and sail to Lahaina
just like the missionaries did, so many years ago

They even brought a neon sign:"Jesus is coming"
Brought the white man's burden down
Brought the white man's reign

Who will provide the grand design?
What is yours and what is mine?
'Cause there is no more new frontier
We have got to make it here

We satifsy our endless needs and
justify our bloody deeds,
in the name of destiny
and the name of God

And you can see them there,
On Sunday morning
Stand up and sing about
what it's like up there

They call it paradise
I don't know why
You call someplace paradise,
kiss it goodbye

- The Last Resort

Another great Dylan 1 liner I remembered:

From a song about a drunkard...

"The whole world is a bottle and life but a dram.

Guns 'n Roses - Get In The Ring, what a great way to have a go at your critics ;D
Anything by Queen 'cos they're fantastic!
The Rolling Stones - Satisfaction ('cos they make sense of life) and Jumpin' Jack Flash ('cos they don't make sense even when you're smashed but they're cool) 8)

My god ozzy that is scary. I very nearly said Get in the Ring was my fav. lyrics, but decided against it on the grounds that I'd be tempted into writing out the lyrics (and getting banned).

That said... "get in the ring motherf**ker and I'll kick your b*tchy little a$$!"  ;D

That is why I decided to name songs rather than type in the lyrics... however I've been tempted a couple of times to use some of them in class at particularly useless students ;D

Listen son, said the man with the gun, there's room for you inside..
Another classic, from the same song.

Probably 'cos all your teachers are so old that they can be classed as nearly dead or so new that they listen to New Age hippy rubbish and'll have a nervous breakdown by Easter ;D

Depends on what Mood I'm in..

Generally it's the more aggresive kinda lyrics up-tempo stuff

But two I want to put in here are from a dutch band and are originally dutch lyrics.

1: What they want me to be, I cannot be

2: I'm not happy with society and society isn't happy about me
