I don't really play any more, but I've been playing for 30 years now, and was pretty into it for over 20 years. Sold my drums years ago to pay the rent...my chops are pretty much gone, but at one time I could reproduce every fill Neil Peart and John Bonham ever came up with, and also played orchestral percussion, marching snare, and some punk rock (not as easy as it sounds!).
Sometimes I miss it, but every now and then I'll get to jam or whatever. ;D

Over my 40+ years of guitaring, I've also paid sharp attention to drummers.  Whereas offhand I can only think of one actual recorded drum solo (I'm sure there are others), namely Toad on Cream's 'Wheels of Fire', performed by Cream's drummer Ginger Baker, you might want to listen to some specific CD's by (in my opinion) great groups that had great and innovative drummers.  They're all from the late 60's, I'm sure there are others from later eras (and even from the jazz era) tho:  Mitch Mitchell on Hendrix' 'Are You Experienced', Ginger Baker on Cream's 'Disraeli Gears', Clive Bunker on Jethro Tull's 'Benefit',  Michael Giles on King Crimson's 'In the Court of the Crimson King', and Billy Cobham on anything by Mahavishu Orchestra.

I played drums with various groups for something like 12 years. That was a long time ago now. I daresay I could still knock out a rhythm if necessary & with only half the effort I used to put into it.

O Baterista parts I & II by neil Peart is the most complex drum solo I have ever heard. It is on the Rush in Rio live album. If you want a drummer's album then I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Y'know, I haven't heard that yet, although I've heard a few other things from that disc. Unlike many drummers, I usually find drum solos boring. I saw Rush live about 4 times over 10 years, and Peart always played exactly the same damn solo as on the first live album. Disappointing, even though it's a great solo.
Best drum solo I ever heard was when I happened to walk into Tower records just as Max Roach was sitting down behind his kit on a little platform there to play by himself for about fifteen minutes. It was mind-blowing: polyrhythmic magic; powerful; lyrical. And all with kick, snare, tom, floor tom, hihat and ride cymbal.  :o

Rush in Rio live

Best album ever.

I play drums and have been for six years now. I just started running a new set. A 2004 Tama Stagestar Custom, Zildjian A Custom Hihats, Zildjian 20" Fast Sweet Ride, Zildjian ZXT Titanium Crash, and a Zildjian ZBT Fast Splash. ;)

I don't own any conventional drums at the moment, but I'm in the process of building a frankensteinian setup - plastic and metal chemical drums and other odds & ends wired up with acoustic triggers, and homemade drum pads (complete with tire-tread slabs for the 'heads'), all hooked up to an Alesis D4, which in turn either triggers my Ensoniq Mirage or a software instrument on my 'puter.

So far, I've got the chem drums procured and done up, and I'm working on the pads and PVC rack on my spare time (which is very limited, as work has me anywhere but home.) Once it's all finished up I'll probably throw up some photos of the beast, and maybe some samples.
