OK, here's the scoop re: Fender Jaguars: From my own personal experience:  I played a 1965 Fender Jag from 1965 to 1970, home prac and gigs.  Everything about that guitar was great except the most important thing: tone quality.  The  65 Jag stayed in tune all gig long, had a very comfortable neck, lightweight, contoured body, excellent for standing with it for long hours.  But it's a single-coil pickup guitar, and just doesn't have the tone quality of a Gibson or anything else, for that matter.  In my opinion, it would be last on my list today.  Every electric I played after that Jag was superior to it, none of them were Fenders, however.  I think the Jag is in production today if you really want one, but do a serious side-by-side test of several other brands.  I cannot recommend a specific brand as I am out of the electric loop these days, however, if you like the Fender sound, Strats are super-popular and probably a better buy.  Good luck!

That's that then. Thanks Apex. Your comments reminded me of similar opinions I heard many years ago. Maybe one day I'll treat myself to a genuine Strat instead. I always wanted one although my old Squier suits me fine for what I use it for.

One more comment re: Fender Jag which I overlooked:  Scale length: the distance from the nut to the bridge.  Jags have, or had, a very short scale length of 24".  You might get cramped up trying to play a scale that short, esp if you have large hands.  As a comparison, Les Pauls are 24.75", and maybe more typically today, scales of 25.5" are common, on Ibanez, Parker Flys, and I think PRS guitars.  Strats are also 25.5" I think.  Take a tape measure with you.  Cheers.
