Not necessarily. A knighthood actually doesn't mean much nowadays, if it ever did. Maybe it does mean something to the recipient but that doesn't impress me.

As an American you can receive an honorary knighthood. In the depths of my marble I seem to remember that Ronald Reagan received one. I'm not sure this entitles you to be addressed as Sir.

Personally I'd love a knighthood, just to get up the collective nose of my family Oh and so I could finally put up with students addressing me as "Sir" without feeling so old

The female equivilant of a Knighthood is called a Damehood. You would address the lady as Dame....
A good example of this is Dame Judy Dench (she is most well known these days for playing 'M' in the Brosnan Bond movies) she is addressed as Dame Judy

Of course Pete if I was to gain a knighthood I wouldn't expect my friends to address me as sir (as if any would ever show me that much respect ) Just certain members of my family, and a couple of twerps I know who I'd enjoy patronising even more than usual
