Only for the timing. He waits until the last of the other swimmers is just hitting the water and launches for splash down. He waits for the water to drain back into the pool while the other contenders are left battered and beached who knows where, then finishes his swim (or a facsimile thereof: with no other contenders, form doesn't matter so much).
