I never got the implication that either were smoking. Just because it's designated the smoking dock doesn't mean that smoking was the only, if even the specific, use for it. At one time there was no fear of "second-hand" smoke and in smaller schools the principal was also the school counsellor, the one you could go to if you had a problem -- if the smoking dock was where he/she happened to be at the time...

Spanking in school is not as antiquated as you might think, in fact I remember getting it a few times back in the early 90's when I was in 3rd or 4th grade... I talked a lot in class... :-/. Anyway, I remember when the Indianapolis* School system "outlawed" spanking. There was quite an outrage among the teachers.

I remember a lad in my class getting the slipper across his arse, he made a derogatory remark about disabled people, it was around the same time that Joey Deacon was in the news thanks to Blue Peter.. it shocked me and the rest of my class (the slipper, not the remark).
I also remember the cane at my High school, although it was a public (private) school so the local education authority rules probably didn't apply.. This was all in the early-mid 1980s.

They were only allowed to hit you a maximum of 5 times and it rarely hurt. That's why they started making paddles with holes in them. They discovered that the holes didn't allow air to build up and cushion the impact.

Yup, I went to a private Catholic school for my elementary/middle school years (late 80's/early 90's) and the Nun's were fierce!!!!  You don't mess with them!!!  The teachers were quick to throw a globe at you as well if you were caught goofing off or sleeping...which of course was never the case with me  ::)

I went to a public high school and couldnt believe the stuff you could get away with there, they werent allowed to hit or throw stuff, it was a field day for those of us that came over from the Catholic school haha I think we were the worst behaved, first taste of freedom!!!

Crap, I had my britches dusted off so much with paddles and switches growing up....lmao....I lost count.

But I never gave up!

Funny part is, my grandmother told me once that I was an Angel compared to her sons and their antics. My mom and all my aunts and uncles verified my grandmothers claims during a family reunion. I have never seen so many people laughing so hard.
