On approach at MKG in IFR minimums last weekend

What are you laughing at?

On approach at MKG in IFR minimums last weekend

Postby newberiffic » Wed Feb 20, 2008 6:25 pm

I was being vectored in to MKG on sunday for the ils 32 and the controller said
Radar contact experimental 12345, 1 miles west of muskegon vor sqwawk 1234 cleared ils 32,

My readback,
Uuuuuh, experimental 12345 is 1 mile EAST of the vor,

without missing a beat
atc says

"roger that experimental 12345 we have you 24,999 miles west of the vor. "

if your a RL pilot you'll get it.

Care to explain why it's funny? We're not all real pilots.

Earths circumference is approx 25,000 miles depending on which source you use...(actually its more like 24,900 miles).  1 mile East of the VOR...or 24,999 miles West of the VOR. :P

Not a pilot...I could be totally wrong :P

Don't assume all pilots are crack geographers... most of them have no idea where they are at any given time, let alone the circumference of the Earth. ;D

Sean, Sean, Sean, when something's flat it's called the 'width', everybody knows the world is flat.

oh brother.

if i had a nickel for every time i heard a pilot call a tower controlled airport and insist he is 10 miles east of the airport while the controller says he is west of the airport... priceless.

eventually the rather red faced pilot admits "oh yes sorry sir your correct WEST of the airport."

i always told my students... when your flying to the airport the TOP of the DG is where the field is in relation to you.... but the BOTTOM of the DG tells you where you are in relation to the field.  ;D
