On the other hand, most cops take minor offences 'with a pinch of salt', as I believe the saying goes. ;)

The last time I got pulled over, it was crazy. I was speeding, I admit that. The cop came to my window and asked why I was going so fast, I told him that I just lost track of it. At that time a car pulled up on the other side of the road and the driver told the cop that there was a fire a few miles up the road. So the cop lets me go and drives off to check out this fire. I continued on my way and a few miles up the road, sure enough there is the cop but no fire. So he pulls me over again. This time he is extremely angry, and asked if I knew the person who stopped earlier. I didn't know her, I have no idea why she told the cop there was a fire, but he was absolutely certain that I was trying to get away with something! So he took my drivers license, and went back to his car. A few moments later he came back and lectured me about the dangers of speeding. His last sentence went something like this "Speeding is serious, you could kill yourself or someone else. You're free to go." Then he just walked away. :o

I think that he realized that the woman who stopped was just screwing with him and that I had done nothing. Here

Another tip if you live in an urban area:

If pulled over at night put your dome light on and place both hands on the steering wheel.  It helps the cops when approaching your car. Too many cops have been shot during a traffic stop.

I can't wait for the day when I can tell a police officer: "Oh no Officer, I wasn't speeding! I was about to rotate!" ;D ;D

Police are like any other group of people, there are good ones and bad ones.  I have worked with law enforcement, and have a deep respect for them.  They have to deal with the worst of society on a daily basis.

Most cops in my town will let you go if you admit you were speeding and don't try and make an excuse.

One of my very good friends is a retired Policeman.

One day I asked him why I am never able to pass the time of day in the street with a Police Officer, and maybe make him laugh, occasionally...!

He told my that part of their training involves not carrying out idle conversation with the general public....

..because...

While this is going on, the Officer is being distracted from my Toe-Rag mate who is busy robbing the Elderly Lady across the street of her handbag, robbing a Bank, stealing a parked car, etc, etc...!

Paul....So now you know why I can never make an Officer-of-the-Law laugh his socks off...and my Toe-Rag mate is constantly getting banged-up in Jail... ::)...!

Solid logic... it's weird to think that these stern-faced, flak-jacket wearing guys can smile and laugh when they're off duty - you never see them smile or laugh, and so the thought strikes me as unusual. Does anyone else agree?

Note; I'm not saying that policemen/women shouldn't laugh or smile... please dont misinterpret me!

My Policeman friend also told me that Police Officers do have a sense of humour...

...but is a form of "Black Humour", which means that we would possibly be disturbed at the sort of things which amuse them...generally involving Death, Corpses, Accidents, etc, etc. which they often encounter in the course of their daily duty...

...possibly to relieve the stress involved in witnessing such things... :o...!

Paul.... 8-)...!

Sort of like soldiers in the First World War would joke about the things they saw at the front, to keep it from overwhelming them.

P.S. I got this from 'All Quiet On The Western Front'

P.P.S. Don't you mean 'Black Humour'?
