A Funny thing to try for April 1st

What are you laughing at?

Here's the problem with the "joke." They may believe that you really are talking to the engineer, and he is going to skip all the stations. At this point, you may have somebody on the train who is drunk, high on drugs - somebody who isn't thinking clearly, put a bullet in you're head. That would make the "joke" be really over. Instead of having a "just a joke" now, you have a homicide investigation.

People you don't know, 99% of the time, don't want to play along with your "jokes."

All I'm saying is, don't f*ck with people. These days, you'll more likely then not, to regret it. This "joke" isn't worth somebody (including yourself) getting killed over.

So don't try it in America. Fortunately in Moscow Communism didn't allow much crime and it's still fairly safe. :P

geez, I'm not planning on doing this, I was just trying to make a point to you that it's a joke. I know there are some people who would do that to you. but I may only be a fireman and not know exactly how to read people's faces to see if they are gonna shoot me but I'd hate going through life thinking that everyone is out to get me.  I think it would be a good time to leave this topic alone and since everyone realizes it is a prank, joke, death sentance, whatever..it's time to drop it.

Just popping in here as a representative for "DEPUTY". He is an Oregon police officer who sees people have no heart every day, so he takes this offensively. As a police officer in New York City, i wouldn't take this as a joke either, but I would find it amusing!

Most New Yorkers would find this offensive and be upset that someone was playing with the intercom. But when they see the food arrive, they would stare and start laughing and have a bewildered look on their face.

So lighten up on the Deputy he see too much crap each day and this stuff wouldn't be funny to him.

oh I wasn't trying to be hard on him, I felt he was just sounding too paranoid about it. that's all. The way you explained it is perfect. Yeah there might be some pissed off people but as soon as the food got there MOST would understand.  I know what Police officers see. it aint always pretty, same in my career. I wasn't trying to come down on him or make him mad, I just tried to keep context of this as a prank/joke, one in which most people aren't even going to try.  Happy Easter everyone. This is the stupidest arguement ever.

Noone is going to shoot you because you DIDN'T use the intercom system.

Yes, you may be right in saying that 99% don't want to play along, but thats a long way from commiting murder.

If people were really this agitated, then we'd have WW3 right on America's highways. Aside from a few extreme instances, its pretty safe to drive on America's highways and exspect NOT to get shot. Emotions do rage on the highways and people do get angry over dumb things, but your average joe is not going to shoot you for it.

This is a joke, its posted in the joke section (big hint). Its meant to be funny. You don't find it funny. Sorry about that, but just move on to the next thread then.

This isn't about using the intercom or not - its about the "playing a joke on the other passengers."

Playing jokes on people you DO NOT know is not only inherently dangerous, it also makes you look like an idiot. The part I'm concerned about is your safety - whether you're in my jurisdiction or not. I could care less whether or not you look like an idiot. I only care about your safety.

Again, like I've said many times before, people are unpredictable. People are unstable. If you get a person using the right drugs, or even the right cocktail of medications, you can have a potential time bomb on your hands. And, mix with this, a feeling of uncertainty (as they believe they are going to miss their stop), they may become extremely violent. And if you add a weapon to this mix, you may very likely have all hell break loose.

And for people not getting murdered over stupid things? Guess again. I've heard of ice cream truck drivers being murdered because they didn't have the right ice cream or popsicle aboard.

As for the average joe comment - remember - they are strangers. You don't know who they are.

Skippy, chill out man! Everyone understands where you are coming from, where this joke is coming from. To be frank..you are going to have people in societly that make fun of other people even if it makes them look like the idiots they are. Hell like I said I would find it amusing especially after a very stressfull day at the office.

I think I might have contributed to all this with my negative comments. I dislike practical jokers as in my experience they can't see the joke if you turn the tables & catch them out. I can't see anyone being assaulted over something like this & would probably find it amusing myself. I would think the likelihood of being shot on the Moscow or London subway systems is almost nil, at least I hope so. One thing occurred to me, do they have a subway in Oregon?

We don't have a subway, per se, however, we do have a train called MAX. MAX stands for Metropolitan Area Express.

Edit - Learn about MAX

well, thank you for being concernd about my safety. I don' plan on doing this just so you know.

I'm not trying to undermine you or anything. I was just trying to put this joke into context. However, I can see you do have justification to say what you have said.

But I also want to say that strangers aren't always the bad people you think they are. I know in your line of work, they often are, but in my life, I seldom have problems with stangers. I often have needed help from stangers (directions etc.) and I haven't been disappointed yet.

Have some faith in humanity.

I would like to echo that comment. I've travelled to many places in this world over the years & will talk to anyone who will listen. This includes down & outs, homeless people nobody else would bother with & black kids hanging around on a street corner in NYC.* I might have been lucky but I find most strangers I've talked to extremely friendly & only too willing to help. Treat them with suspicion & they will be suspicious of you.

On the subject of the April Fools joke; after giving it some thought I suspect that if you did it on the London Tube other passengers would either ignore you or smile & appreciate the joke. Most people in this country have a sense of humour. That would be the locals as London is usually full of tourists & I can't speak for them.

One thing that does annoy people & sometimes leads to positive action is the persistent & selfish use of mobile phones when you can't help listening to senseless one-ended conversations. These are usually so loud that they can be heard even at the other end of the compartment. I've heard about more than one instance when after refusing to switch the darned thing off when asked politely the offender's phone has been thrown out of the train window with the full approval of the other passengers. Having been forced to put up with this non-stop drivel throughout the journey nobody in the compartment would admit to having witnessed the evil deed. ;)

PS. I felt safer on the streets of Manhattan after dark than in my home town. This is no doubt due to Mav & his colleagues in the NYPD who have my deepest respect.

I agree with what Hagar and autopilot said 100%! Practical jokers shouldn't play practical jokes if they can't take them. (Didn't have this particular one played on me, but I did have a stranger hand me a carrot in the metro...but thats another (long) story)
Also, as Hagar said, people are generally nice and helpfull as long as you act the same way. A person can feel anger or suspision from you when you walk up to somebody just as he can feel your positive emotions. Kinda like Aura. A smile always helps with strangers too.

Oh no! Here in Moscow our metro is VERY deep, so fortunately some of the oldest stations don't have transmitters yet! However most do, but the good thing is that operators make them only strong enough to broadcast to the station and the escalators (for the reasons you stated and some others)...about 10 seconds after the train leaves the station, the signal dies. Only usefull for SMS's. The other unfortunate fact is that more than 2/3rds of Russians have phones, and about 95% of people living in Moscow and major cities do too, but for the reasons stated above, they are limited to silently pressing away SMS's!
