Mowing the grass

What are you laughing at?

No, that is the other end of the spectrum like Monty Pyton and other such nonsense that is over there on your isle. You guys don't have anything in the middle, its one extreme or the other. Both of which are too much strangeness for most of us Americans, not yanks thank you very much, to apeal to. :P

We certainly do have something in the middle. It's simply too specialised & doesn't export well. I don't expect you to understand or enjoy our jokes any more than I understand most of yours. The late Bob Hope never made me laugh once although he was born in England & was obviously a very clever & talented comedian. His was what I would call typical American humour. He employed a lot of British gag writers over the years including the late Bob Monkhouse - a very talented comedian in his own right. He said that he had to completely change his method of writing for US audiences so they could understand the humour. Some of the more recent American comedians have a definite British slant to their humour which is where the subtlety comes in.

The term Yank might not be accurate in all cases but it's an affectionate term for all Americans since they served here in WWII.* It's not intended to be offensive any more than the term Limey or Tommy for a Brit. The sooner people understand that the better we will understand each other. ;)

*PS. There was even a popular song entitled "Over There" used as a march by US forces during WWI. It was composed by an American, George M Cohan, who was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for boosting wartime morale. The chorus "The Yanks are Coming" was used as a title for a book & a film.
Over There

Johnnie, get your gun,
Get your gun, get your gun,
Take it on the run,
On the run, on the run.
Hear them calling, you and me,
Every son of liberty.
Hurry right away,
No delay, no delay,
Make your daddy glad
To have had such a lad.
Tell your sweetheart not pine,
To be proud her boy's in line.

(chorus)
Johnnie, get your gun,
Get your gun, get your gun,
Johnnie show the Hun
Who's a son of a gun.
Hoist the flag and let her fly,
Yankee Doodle do or die.
Pack your little kit,
Show your grit, do your bit.
Yankee Doodle fill the ranks,
From the towns and the tanks.
Make your mother proud of you,
And the old Red, White and Blue.
(chorus - twice)

CHORUS
Over there, over there,
Send the word, send the word over there--
That the Yanks are coming,
The Yanks are coming,
The drums rum-tumming
Ev'rywhere.
So prepare, say a pray'r,
Send the word, send the word to beware.
We'll be over, we're coming over,
And we won't come back till it's over
Over there.

I understand the angle you are coming from being a Brit. I am not taking offence at what you are saying nor am I trying to start a fight. I am just trying to say that my brain is wired different than yours when it comes to humor and some things make sense while others don

From my end, go ahead. From now on the response will be:
;D, or :P. No more of this: ???; it isn't worth it.

So yes, please post more so that I can be exposed to more brit humor and maybe figure it out, since I apprently do not understand it at all.

Sorry, if I pissed you off again Hagar,

No problem. I replied in haste without reading your reply* through properly which was inexcusable. I was never afraid to admit I when I'm wrong or to say sorry. You were basically repeating what I was trying to say. Some things like humour simply don't export well. This works both ways. Our cultural differences should be respected, not met with ridicule if you don't understand them. (Winding each other up in fun is a national sport on this side of the Puddle which could be offensive if taken the wrong way.)
*As you deleted it I'll remove my comments to avoid any further confusion. ??? ::) ;)

and next time I simply won't bother asking if I don't get something one of you has said, it is obviously to big of a pitfall to risk. :-[ :P

Please don't hesitate to ask if you don't understand anything - providing you're really interested & not out to provoke a squabble.

Shall I put any more jokes up

Tony C

Yes please Tony. The joke was not the problem here. It gave me a good giggle anyway. LOL ;D

Nice to hear. I wasn't ridiculing your humor, although in hindsight it probably came off as if I was. :-X :-[

Oh belive me, winding people up is a sport over here too, except we just call it "politics" instead. ;)

I figured it would be better to remove now than wait and let others take a shot at it later (and If you can't read it anymore, than you can't get mad at it very well either).
;D ;D

I don't ever ask to create a clash, I get enough of that at school with my some asinine classmates. IF i ask, I genuinely want to know. If I am asking period that means I realy don't get it. I am usaly too embarrased to admit it so I wait for some other person who is lost to ask and let him reap the consequences. :)

Again, yes Tony post more, the wolves have gone home: it's safe now.Image

Look, it is just simple British humor. Don't look for the hidden meaning or anything else, What you think it's about: that's all there is to the joke.

I was actualy considering Mars and finding the lander as a nice long trip. ;)

Oh well, your sense of humor would make up for my lack of one. ;)

Speaking of mars has anyone else seen that new commercial where the Mars lander gets field stripped and put on cinder blocks by martians?
