B-17 flyover

I was playing golf yesterday when I saw this huge 4 engine WW2 era prop fly over.

I've seen a DC3 or C47 fly over twice in the past few months, fairly close.

Back in the early 60's they were using a B-25 for mosquito spraying, low level patterned fly overs at tree top level, quite a sight.

The Dept of Agriculture is dropping sterile med flies in an attempt to control the med fly population, they've been using a Beechcraft B-65A King Air twin piston several times a week for the past two years or so, flying about 500 feet very nearly overhead in my and other areas.

Nice to know some are still out there.

I would imagine that the word; "Huge" would be a very suitable descriptive word!... ... ..!

I get the occasional Cessna 152 and Microlight drifting slowly over my back garden... ...!

Never took a flight but watched a B-24 and B-17 land and a P-51D land and take off at KLCI (Laconia, NH) a couple years ago; boarded the B-17.
At the end of the last century in Beatrice, NE, I was surprised to see a Heinkel 111 fly over. Correctly expecting it on display, I drove to the KBIE airprort and boarded both B-17 and Heinkel.
I used to assemble 1:48 scale aircraft so certain details weren't apparent; walking around the front of the B-17, the gun before me was clasped by a large zipper; apt, I guess: during combat it pi$$ed off quite a stream.

I'd have loved to see the B-17. I live under one of the approaches to CYOO (Oshawa Municipal) and there is a cargo transport company there using a DC-3, so I'm lucky to see that often. There have been other cool craft as well, common but still cool, like Learjets, Citations, the Government of Canada's Challenger....but the best of all so far was an RCAF SAR Griffon (Huey if you're not Canadian) cruising over low enough in altitude to see the winch operator's face. That chopper made windows rattle here. As well, one of the lieutenants from CFB Trenton (CYTR) did his original flight training at CYOO, and once in a blue moon he makes a fly by with a touch and go in a Globemaster.

For me, all that is exciting, however some of my neighbours complain about the noise. Fortunately, I find them hard to hear over the various planes' engines

[size=11]I remember a visit to a "Confederate Air Force" show back around 1998-99. It's now called the "Commemorative Air Force". Same people, same great planes.

Last summer I went to the "Air Mobility Command Museum" in Dover, Delaware. No planes were flying that day, but it was still great to see all of the planes. Depending on the day many of the planes are open for a self guided tour.

The Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum houses an Avro Lancaster...another beautiful beast from that era. It goes on tour every summer, making it's way across the continent for various airshows and display events. They also sell rides in the plane, which is something I would love to have an extra few thousand dollars kicking around for.

I've seen it twice come through our city in the tour. I watched it do a low pass and landing twice, and those 4 merlin engines are a sound unequalled by much else in aviation, except maybe a formation of mustangs!
