Garry, as a responsible gun owner myself, I have to disagree with you as do millions upon millions of responsible and safe gun owning Americans do.

Sorry, I don't really think we should go back to death by stoning or lynch mobs. Civilized societies must have criminal justice systems, imperfect though they may be. It really would not be a good idea to abandon civilization just because you're angry about the evil some psycho criminal has done. If a society or a government can abuse the guilty, the next easy step is to start abusing and oppressing those who are not guilty. There really is much to be said about the Rule of Law, considering the alternatives.

The gun rights issue is tainted by the fact that so much money is involved - the gun business is a big business, and lots of profits to be made. But something has to change in light of the repeated massacres in the US. I don't think responsible gun owners are getting any new supporters by saying "gun control won't help - get used to mass murderers using guns, live with it." The NRA is doing a lousy campaign this time, too, with its ridiculous proposals to turn schools into prisons with armed guards everywhere. Not to mention that over-the-top ad about the President's children. I even saw one gun-rights supporter, a science-fiction author, actually making the claim that he should have the right to own a Minuteman missile.

Timothy McVeigh used ammonium nitrate and motor-racing fuel to kill 160 +.

Seems to me that Norway has some of the strictest gun control laws and the laws didn't stop a determined pyscho getting weapons and from killing 77 people.

People hell bent on killing will not be stopped or deterred in anyway by any laws that only law abiding people will follow.

Yes sir, then there is the issue of mental problems. It sounds like this guy had some kind of mental problem. If he had received the proper help this whole even might have been avoided.

Once again, I stand that the real issue with violent crimes like this has to do more with a lack of proper care for special needs people.
More often than not.

Because it is likely a mental disorder, it is very unfair to just give them the death penalty. In cases like this, plenty of times the mentally impaired do not understand what they did is wrong or can control themselves.

I have had to deal with plenty of pretty nasty problems with special needs family members. I know what I am talking about.

That's actually illegal here in Washington State. We have what they call "Big Game" here.
Shooting a deer with a .22 is more likely to mame or wound than to kill. Very irresponsible.

I may never face down a charging bear. I surely don't want to have a single shot .22 in my hand if I do though

I would have no problem checking my guns in with "trusted" local authorities if they were readily available when I wanted them for sport use...... Like the Ol' West when you had to check your guns before going into town. I think that's a fair idea except for one thing. I need a gun for home defense too. If allowed to keep one weapon for this purpose it would be a viable idea on a small scale, but too expensive for large scale......in big cities where most of the violence happens :-/
