What is an assault rifle?

Postby Webb » Fri Dec 21, 2012 2:01 am

This is the best debunker I have ever read.

Shooting Blind

Press coverage of the "assault weapon" controversy suggests that most journalists know very little about guns and are not interested in learning.

In a September 1988 report on "assault weapons" that he prepared for the Education Fund to End Handgun Violence, gun control advocate Josh Sugarmann candidly observed: "The weapons' menacing looks, coupled with the public's confusion over fully automatic machine guns versus semi-automatic assault weapons anything that looks like a machine gun is assumed to be a machine gun can only increase the chance of public support for restrictions on these weapons. In addition, few people can envision a practical use for these guns."

So back in 1988, one of the nation's leading gun prohibitionists was banking on public support for restrictions on "semi-automatic assault weapons," not because Americans were informed about the guns in question, but because they were uninformed and likely to remain so. Sugarmann, now executive director of the Violence Policy Center, could rely on the public's continuing confusion because he knew he would have the help of the nation's leading news organizations. During the next few years the major TV networks, newspapers, and magazines persistently misled the public about the capabilities of "assault weapons," falsely implied that the guns have no legitimate use, and ignored the Second Amendment issues at stake. Given the intensity of this misinformation, it is hardly surprising that polls find some 70 percent of Americans support the "assault weapon" ban approved by Congress last year (1994) ...

Journalists like politicians like, to think that they are carrying the flag and are purveyors of truth and justice. The truth is, like politicians, they twist the facts for personal gain. When required, tell your what they think you want to hear. Use their writings to make political statements and points of view and when it fits, just like politicians, if they think they can get away with it due to public ignorance lie through their collective teeth. Not forgetting when they do print lies, the retraction in buried deep in the back pages using the smallest print possible.....
In the UK we have a similar view of hand guns. To the press any pistol that is not a revolver is an "automatic" pistol.... ::)

I hear you Webb. I've seen quite a few chef knives that look pretty menacing compared to a military bayonet,
but as we can see, all govs play on the ignorance of the people these days, cause our education system is a farce, and the populas gets more ignorate everyday. Hell any one with intelligance knows any object can be used as an "assault" weapon. As a Marine veteran, I'll use a q-tip to "assault" you if that's the only thing handy at the time.
Whats sad is that law abiding gun owners are being scared into leaving ther weapons at home. Look what happened to one fella who took his legally purchased gun and had a valid conceled weapons permit to the movies after that massacre in Colorado, he got arrested. If there would have been at least ONE armed person in each of these incidents, maybe they could have been stopped before so many got killed. THEY, got the people trained well, fear me if you see my 1911 on my hip, but don't worry about the insane one with weapon in hand firing away, cause the GOV will protect you. Misinformation is THERE drug THEY use to control the weakmind. Our forefathers who started the building of the US knew this could happen and gave us the rights to be able to defend ourselves, from foreign and DOMESTIC enemys, so The USA will always remain a land of freedom. There will always be insane and just plain bad and evil people on this world, and it seems with all there bogus laws already on the books, does nothing but protect those people, and leave us normal citizens in the lurch. My heart aches for all those who lost love ones, but my grief will fade, theres will last forever. :'( :'( :'(

These so called assault weapons are just standard rifle bores dressed up visually to resemble military style automatic weapons. But then I think that was stated in the link.
