Origins of Halloween (Samhain)

We can trace Halloween back to Celtic festivals which celebrated the new year on the 1st of November (not 1st of January).

In Hungary today is the Day of The Dead, a national holiday and people go and place flowers or wreathes on the graves of dead friends or relatives.
It is also strangely my wife's best friends nameday... and yes I do take the mickey our of Marianne, I always get her a condolence card for her nameday ;D

Just finished eating those black licorice [cigars]...
It rather irks me how many call 'strawberry' or 'cherry' (artificially flavored or elsewise) twists/vines licorice; I've found a source, however, of a non-sugar licorice-flavored variety colored in the original black.

Goodly morning "H"... :)

Now are you talking about the salted black licorice we see in specialty candy shops here and not available at the local variety or food marts?

We have made our own licorice which is real tasty but the old girl was too busy to do that for Halloween this year.
Perhaps I will get treated for Christmas.... ;D

Now that I think of it one of the specialty shops here which carries German Foods also carries a type of black licorice.

Again, I think that is salted also.

Could you post a Link for me on what you have on licorice?

Thanks... ;)

A Licorice Enthusiast can instantly be identified by their black tongue.

;D ;D ;D...Thanks Paul.

It is hard to get candy or food without artificial flavouring anymore.

There are several small specialty shops/stores that still make chocolate treats in our local area.  They do not ship them to the large stores.

However, you pay two to three times more for their product than what you would pay at the local supermarket or corner variety store for a chocolate bar.

The parent company is the American Licorice Company and, if I read correctly, the company still has a plant in Illinois as well as California with its corporate headquarters moved from Illinois to Colorado; regardless, they should be slightly closer to you than to me and you should be able to ask a store manager to order them. The local RiteAid drug store stocks them (per my request but I noticed they were disappearing off the peg by other hands); the regular price here is $2.25 but they've occasionally put them on sale at two for $3.00. They have various flavors (flavours) but their twists brand name for all is : Red Vines

I also read that over nine decades ago they took over a former WWI munitions manufacturing plant; I guess they had to do something with the left-over powder -- eating licorice back then must have been a real blast... :o :D
