Hurricane Sandy, and Flight Sim..

Postby Fozzer » Mon Oct 29, 2012 6:53 am

Hello Chums... :)...!

As an avid Flight Sim Explorer, at the moment I am keeping an constant eye on the circulating Hurricane Sandy, as it approaches New York and the surrounding area...>>> http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-20121811

I fire up my Flight Sim, park at KJFK, select REX "Weather Advisory" Engine, and the Sim Jeppesen Real Weather, for the local areas, and take off.
At the moment, although there is a lot of cloud around, with occasional rain showers, I do not detect any dangerous "Storm Wind Buffeting" effects.
Is this possible to reproduce these effects in the Flight Sims?
Anyone else tried it out in this Hurricane, using Real Weather?

Paul...any port in a storm... 8-)...!

Not this one but I flew into Katrina at New Orleans.

Did it have any realistic effect on your aircraft, Webb, with downloaded "Real Weather" for the location?

Last night I flew a C-5 Galaxy out of McGuire AFB, New Jersey, in FSX, through lots of rain squalls and lightning, using REX 2 Overdrive for my real-time weather. It was a bumpy ascent, the usual when thunderstorms are nearby, but the storm's center was still miles and miles offshore at that time.

Yes, the wind was from the south and  the runway was east/west.  I had to fly my Kingair pretty much directly south to stay in line with the runway.

I've heard of "crabbing" before but I  never saw it like that!

The storm is due to hit the New York coast on Tuesday, so I'll dial up Jeppesen real weather, and see how realistic the Sim is at KJFK in my Beech King Air 350.

KJFK should be fun.

I'm 600 to 800 miles away from the eye yet we are actually getting some nasty winds from the very edges of Sandy. When I flew through a hurricane last, real weather in FSX, was about half of what it should have been

Tuesday...

I'm off for a fly around New York to test the Jeppesen weather download.

As an aside, I hear on the news that the New York Subways are flooded.
How on earth, can all that amount of water be removed from the miles of flooded underground tunnels...and where is it all dumped....and the amount of damage to the electrical system?

Paul.... :o....!

P.S.

I endured the wind end of the storm, did not loose power, played FS9 and FSX, real world weather was not accurate, just a little bit.
