Failed!

Postby ozzy72 » Fri May 25, 2012 7:07 am

Well guys, we failed. We managed to complete Ben Nevis but at a price. Instead of five hours up and down, it turned into an 8 hour slog. We ran out of water before the summit (why did Scotland have to have its hottest day of the year for 50 years?).
Even with Factor 50 on this is the state of my limbs;
Image
The back of my neck and my nose look even worse.
We were reduced to drinking stream water on the way back down. At the bottom I had to make the toughest call of my life and abort. I was the least burnt and I was in a bad way. Sunburn, heat exhaustion and dehydration! Not what we were expecting this early in the year!!!
The one weather type we'd not trained for and it got us good and proper!
However fear not, for the Revenge Tour is going back in September to settle scores and complete the Challenge! So here is a wee taster of what to expect ;)

Nope, we're keeping the Just Giving site open, we're going back at the end of Sept. to settle the score!
At the moment my nose is leaking weird yellow goo that is congealing and needs peeling off.
We're not giving up , just because the one thing we'd not planned for caught us out doesn't mean we're quitting.
No mercy, no surrender to quote my Wedding Vows ;)

I feel for you. I felt exhausted from heat just 20 minutes into my bike ride today.  8 hours is a good effort!

To those not in the know, the temperature has shot up massively this past week. In about 4 days it went from around 10-12C here and rain up to 26-28C with no clouds. It's mad!

Whilst you and your team didn't make it in the time you wanted, I don't consider your effort a failure by any sense of the word.

You guys amassed a good portion of proceeds for a more than worthy cause= WIN

Creating cancer awareness, A mountain in itself= WIN

Making the right choices as a team while on the summit= WIN

Your team is going to kick that mountains ass in September=WIN

I couldn't find any kind of FAIL in your thread. I'm personally damn proud of you guys and your cause. Now go peel your nose, grab a pint for me, rest and regroup.

I raise my glass to you and your crew. Well done lads!

Thanks Mike for your kind words. Ironic the only weather we'd not trained for and the met. office were about 1000% out on their prediction that nailed us! We've been out in rain, sleet, snow, gales, hail, the lot... and then on the day we get nothing but glorious sunshine and blue skies and not a jot of shade ::)
However we might have lost that battle but we'll win the war ;D ;D ;D I'm back into training tomorrow and focused on claiming that prize come September!

As far as heat is concerned Mark. You and the crew hop the pond and come visit me at Fort Bragg. I'm in the middle of cooking a Texas brisket and another in a Southern Whiskey marinade. It's hot as hell out right now. This is where you should train for the hot bits in the event you run into this situation again. Beer, meat, and a brand new 22' pool. I got you covered ;).

I am actually contemplating the money it would take me to get a passport and plane ticket to join your Sept run if i'm able. Never been to Scotland or the UK for that matter....Hmmmmm,the wheels are turning..

Ditto all of that Ozzy, well done.
I live in a ground floor flat for a reason...
Distance to carry groceries from car-trunk to kitchen = 100ft

Ditto what Mike said.  Well done, Ozzy!
WIN: You can tell people that the time is "two hairs past a freckle, or quarter 'til a sunburn."
As to my endurance levels...I chose a ground floor apartment so that the distance from the car trunk (boot, for those across the water) to the kitchen is only about 45 feet.  Unloading the car of groceries into my flat is a lazy man's dream-come-true.
