How many of us built (Or build) Model planes?

Postby CaptainCub » Thu Mar 29, 2012 10:49 am

While working on a repaint project, I was struck by the thought that computer flight simulation is lke being able to get into a model airplane you've built and painted and flying it. So I was wondering how many others built model planes when they were younger and perhaps still do? I often scan the decal sheets from some kits to get the emblems and other markings I need for some project, making my two hobbies  mesh. How about the rest of you?

Interesting topic... :)

I can remember my grandfathers (2) making wooden aircraft models of World War One Aircraft and pieces of Army Kit like trucks and artillery pieces and then selling them.

I think my dad had a couple that my older brother got.

My father used to make huge Box Kites from wood and fabric.

2. And, if you have time to write the fault on a napkin and attach to it to the yoke.........you have time to write it in the tech log....see point 1.

I remember the aroma of Testors Model Airplane Cement very well ... and the list of bad kids who were banned from buying it at the local Ben Franklin store! It was the Sixties.

Both my father and I built model airplanes and ships. My best was a P-47 Thunderbolt and the XB-70 Valkyrie. Dad's crowning achievement was the huge Cutty Sark clipper ship that stood atop our TV-stereo-HiFi console after it was completed.

Visiting the model section in the five-and-dimes was always a treat, all but gone now in the big box corporate stores. Only Hobby Lobby still has a sizeable model section, with the best model kits coming from Japan or other counties. Revel seemed to digress into just NASCAR auto models and such.

Every year most of our models met their doom on the Fourth of July, blasted to pieces by firecrackers. It made room for new models.

I've been building off and on for about 20 years as well. I have half a garage wall full of half built or new kits. Mostly cars but I have alot of aircraft as well. Love the Tamia kits. Specially the race cars. Looking for a space in my home to start building again as a matter of fact ;)

I still build scale models of planes. And until 2 years ago I flew combustion RC planes too. I broke mine and never got around to fix it because of lack of time.

I've recently started building paper models... They come out surprisingly good!

I once TRIED to make a model f-16...

But 1/4 of the part where missing and 2/4 didn't fit. ;D
So I gave up,or unless you count paper airplanes,I've made quite alot,I know several good ones that are extremely good, but only when folded perfectely. ;D

Used to really be into making Airfix Models.

I made about 20 planes, all 1/72. The most memorable ones were the Lancaster, Sunderland & a Ju 52*.

I also made a few tanks & even a Sub & Aircraft Carrier.

I've got a model of the Battleship HMS Nelson sitting in my room waiting to be started.

* Memorable because the parts didn't fit together.

I have done plastic tanks, planes, and ships (Captain Kidd being my crowning model). Also have worked on several R/C projects: boats, cars, and planes. R/C Boats I worked on with my dad were the Calicite (Great Lakes freighter) ~6ft long, Ocean Challenger fishing boat, USN gun boat, and a PT-109. R/C planes ranged from the Snowy Owl trainer to Zero and just about everything in between (no jets). For R/C cars we did 1/8 scale electrics, mine: Ferrari Enzo and Evader baja style buggy (favorite car). Dad did a Ferrari F1, Raybrig racer, metal HUMVEE, aaaand did a Leopard MK1 Main Battle Tank complete with authentic metal tracks.

Now I design R/C planes for the AIAA DBF competition here at WMU.

In short, I am a modeler raised by a modeler.

In the 70's I built two RC planes with piston power. Each one was the same kit because I crashed the first one and figured I could use it for spare parts. I reused the 0.60cc engine and fuel tank, etc, on the second one to save money. First one however.. About 1000 dollars and 8 or 900 hrs to build and on first flight I ended up prying the engine out of the dirt with a screwdriver. Couldn't bring myself to take the second one off the ground.

I built model planes when I was a kid a little bit, I've gotten into RC planes recently (I had 2 recently, one crashed due to signal problems, just ordered one and bought another today ;))

Designed a plane in college by myself, if there's any interest I'll post a thread about it, also helped design a plane for AIAA Design-Build-Fly (did all the CAD work and helped build) last year.

Of course, my current profession has more than a little to do with airplanes.  Not models ;D
