Donors?

Postby ozzy72 » Thu Mar 31, 2011 2:07 pm

Just given blood as my once every 4 month gift to the NHS, just wondered if there are any other donors here at SimV?

I was turned down as a donor, too many drugs in it, not illicit ones I  hasten to add, drugs the doctor has told me I need to take to make life worth living.

I had to give a tiny sample of blood for a test once. So what does big manly TacitBlue do? He passes out before they even have enough for the test. It would appear that I have a phobia. ::)

I have to give a warning before a syringe gets near me; it also seems I can still converse while unconscious and my heart has stopped ( temporarily.. it's beating now... just checked).

I used to years ago.  The last couple of times I tried, my body reacted negatively, dizziness, cold sweats, shakes, and they had to unhook me.  Not sure why, I don't have an aversion to blood or needles, but I haven't tried since.

I donate to our Red Cross when I can.  I get a little lightheaded but as long as I don't watch I can hang in there.  As for those thick freakin needles though, I sure wish they would size them down a peg, they are the only needles in the numerous ones we military guys get stuck with every year that hurt.  If it saves a life though it's worth it.

I have a very big thing about needles, but I did try to over come that once. My wife gives blood, so I went along and decided to give it a try. I sweated so profusely through the whole thing that they said it was probably a good idea that I try another method to over come my phobia. I can just about stand my flu jab, but even hovers on a "big girls blouse" moment

I originally started giving blood to get over my hang-up about needles. I can cope but I wouldn't say it is a pleasant experience.
The inside of my left elbow is purple and yellow this morning. Makes me look like some half-wit heroin addict :P

I am on some powerful pain relief which can cause liver and kidney damage so I have to have blood tests every 6 months.

A few years ago I had a totally inept phlebotomist who couldn't find a vein and so my arm was poked full of holes as she probed for the elusive vein. She eventually got the blood flowing, but then couldn't stem the flow.
The end result was a badly bruised  inside to the elbow with blueish, purple streaks radiating down my fore arm.

It was one of those rare hot and sunny summers and I was wearing shorts and T shirt. I was also suffering from partial paralysis and under the influence of the aforementioned powerful painkillers and was very unsteady on my feet. Inevitable I was stopped by a copper who thought I was a junky. My indignant and flowery rebuttal was not fully appreciated and nearly resulted in an arrest.

Spare a thought for diabetics. My wife is a type 1 diabetic and has to inject herself 4 times a day and do at least four blood test to check her blood sugar levels. Needles play a big part in her life.

I dislike needles and have only ever 'given blood' on a complete blood count test.

I'm a bit against giving blood, and fairly against receiving it, but I am an organ donor... So I'm giving back in big ways at some point  ;D

I used to be a regular donor for many years, but sadly, the blood people stopped coming to my town with their mobile clinics. Always made me feel ten feet tall.

The weird thing is that I'm not queasy about needles or blood. I think it was psychological thing. When you break it down, you are sitting down and allowing some stranger to injure you and drain your blood. I guess that my brain couldn't handle that.

Don't get me wrong, I think it's noble as a grape to give blood and I hope I can get some if I ever need it. I just can't make myself give it.

I'm only 18 so I haven't been able to give blood for very long, I've given it once and have my next appointment on tuesday of this week!

It's not at all painful and I'm fine with needles so that's lucky, the thing that was the worst was the cleaning fluid that they used on my arm as it smells alot like Vodka which really really really makes mee feel Ill.

The best thing is the free Tea & Biscuits :P
