Now when someone says 'youth' or 'teenager' you probably expect some hooded chav who's about to stab you in the face, but I've noticed a trend of less horrific events which happen on a daily basis (which makes it pretty bad)

Elder people walking!

They don't even have to be a pensioner, though the majority are. I've noticed a trend of people being incredible inconsiderate and entirely blind to the world around them. If I'm walking along the pavement and there are people approaching I move to one side. The younger sort (usually under 35) move to the other side of the pavement and you have instant walk-past satisfaction. If they have a pram or whatever, I try my best to move onto the road and walk there.

But elder people!

I go to one side of the pavement (usually 50 metres or so before I walk past them) and they are completely oblivious and continue to walk straight down the middle of the pavement and hardly move. I just give up bothering to walk in the road and if they bump into me then that's their fault. Likewise if they're walking side by side they never bother to walk where one person is following the other and to avoid being run down by pedestrians I am forced to walk in the road... The pavements can just about fit 2 people. All they had to do is have one of them slow down and follow the other person... Us youths are perfectly able to carry out this simply procedure.


I mean, how hard is it to look and walk? At college between lesson changeovers it's entirely possible to pass by a group of 50-100 people within a few moments and not bump into a single one of them, even when they're approaching and leaving from 6 or 7 separate destinations. You just look where you are going and it's easy. But then these people don't have the common sense to allow 2 people to walk in opposite directions down the pavement when nobody else is about.


Really. The whole youth culture is a lie... It's the eldery who are really causing the issues. They don't even have to be that old, but past a certain age it seems like they don't care who is going where and that the world revolves around them. I really couldn't care anymore if I did bump into them, I give them 10-20 seconds reaction time and the whole side of the pavement to use and they ignore it. Sometimes I walk to the right side of the pavement very early on and they'll still walk into me as they'll cross sides and just walk right at me.

There's good & bad in all age groups. You're making the same mistake as the old miseries who complain about all young people just because they're young.

Oh no it was a wonderful day... Triple physics, tech and electronics (I'm probably the first person you'll hear say that was a good day!)

It has been going on for weeks, but it has gradually become worse.

It just bugs me that these people are likely to be the ones to say that all 'youths' are bad people and kick up a storm if anyone ever did anything out of line. They need to accept that we nor they are perfect. Yeah I can see potential irony in this, but I don't pretend I am perfect and I only fuss about them because no doubt they'd so happily fuss about us.

You obviously have a chip on your shoulder about this. I wonder if it shows in your body language. I don't know what the old fogies are like up your way but I can't imagine them being more grumpy than they are down here, especially in this lovely weather. 8-)

Unlike that old misery guts Fozzer, I enjoy going out & meeting people. I walk about with a smile on my face (actually more like a stupid grin ) & find that people of all ages generally smile back. It makes my day when pretty young ladies flash me a lovely smile & say Hello. [smiley=2vrolijk_08.gif]

Perhaps you should try it next time you go out. If everyone was a little more tolerant this world would be a much better place.

I tried being Mr Nice Guy. I don't go out of my way to give them a huge smile, but I show respect for them and they return it by kicking me in the ankles. I don't swing or kick when walking, I just act like a typical person.

Even if I did smile or if I wore a shirt saying 'I love you all' they'd never see it and they'd just continue along as if the pavement was their red carpet.

Really, I wouldn't complain unless I was certain I'd done all I could reasonably do, or if I was deliberately doing something. I'm not going to cross the road for them and it's not fair on drivers when I have to put a foot on the road because I'm about to be mown down because of someone elses inconsiderations.

I imagine the age group you're talking about includes your own parents. I'm not trying to make out that all old fogies are saints. Some of my neighbours are miserable old sods but they are in the minority. Most of us have children & grandchildren of our own so we're used to young people. Also, the pavements around here must be considerably wider than the ones up your way.

They really must be quite small. I think there's a patch of just a few hundred metres where you can fit 5-7 people in a line, then it narrows to just 3 and then just 2 comfortably. The paths are not wide, so it doesn't help when two people walk right at you and don't move. Your only options are to; stand still and hope they eventually move; walk in the road (not nice for the drivers around you) or keep going.

A global effort goes a long way.
