I use the trusty brain. It knows exactly which language it wants to speak in, it knows which accent I am using, it knows which style of voice I am using and above all it will never break down in the sense of having a software crash (other break downs are unavoidable).

You're lucky. Wait until you get older. You will find that the old brain frequently malfunctions. :'(

The spell checker is simply a tool to help people whose spelling or typing is not so hot. It can't correct grammar or similar sounding words used in the wrong context - like to, two & too. It's an optional feature which can easily be disabled if you prefer not to use it.

Things are very different now from when I was at school. Back then all school work was written in longhand & the only spell checker was your brain & a dictionary. Work containing too many errors or corrections was rejected which meant doing it all over again until we got it right. We soon learnt to check our work carefully before submitting it.

I have to admit that the spell checker has made me lazy. It found several typing errors in this reply which saved me revising it before pressing the Post button.

...and that's where its beauty lies... ;)...!

Paul....constantly typing groups of letters in teh reverse order.... :-[.... ;D....!

...its the "Getting old" syndrome!... :'(....!

The Spell Checker is my personal "Proof Reader", and identifies some of my silly mistakes (mostly!), before I press the Post Button!.... ;D...!

Lazy: In the olden days of letter writing, before the introduction of the Internet, the "Oxford English Dictionary" was my constant companion....
...its just collecting dust, in the corner now!... :'(...!

Even though this browser has spell check, I have Wiktionary in the tool bar, as well as Wikipedia and often consult one or the other on spelling, meaning, or information. And going to Wikipedia often leads me off on a tangent and a neat learning experience. I have to admit, it is one of my most used links.

I was brought up knowing that spelling and correct grammar are essential to everyday life.  The difference between "lie" and "lay" is something I'm constantly working on between my friends.

However, I do use the spellchecker included with Firefox.  But I don't simply let it correct my mistakes or right-click and select a correction.  If it underlines a word, I go back and type it again.  If I simply can't find the correct spelling, I use the right-click method, and I'll most likely remember it for future use, since I spent time trying to figure it out anyway.
