Spell Checker

Good afternoon all...

Looking for a good free spell checker to use when typing a post.  The one I had Word Web is no longer free.  Worked great, when typing a post I could pop over to the quick launch and without losing the post check the spelling.

I have tried two while typing this post and when you activate them you lose what you have typed in the post.  Not good for someone my age...

Any help with links would be most appreciated...

Hi Doug. I use the Firefox browser which comes with a spell checker plug-in. Very useful.

For IE8 have you tried the Google Toolbar? Apparently checks grammar too. http://blogote.com/2009/google-technology/ie-spell-check-addon-free-spell-checker-for-internet-explorer-8.html

Like Doug, I use the Firefox spell Checker.... ....

...also the Firefox "Translator"; which comes in handy for deciphering those Browser links which folks post, containing "funny languages".... ...!

Outer Mongolian to English, Redneck to English, etc...

I can't believe you guys don't just rely on the proper spelling and (probably) typing instruction that was whipped into you under whale-oil lamps, back in the Steam Age... 

Me, I barely made it under the wire before state schools in the US started going downhill, and I take great pride in never using a spell-checker program. There are some now-deceased teachers who would be happy about that- I owe it to them to keep trying. 
My errors seen here are only due to very poor typing skills, and sometimes I just let them lie... it looks more human.

You say so only because you haven't seen the initial keyboard attack of my fat little fingers.

If that makes me appear less than human then so be it.

Like the rest of us, if a px picture* of you was never posted, you wouldn't appear human at all.

Good evening all...

Maybe we are old (fuss budgets...Thinks about unfortunate things that might happen) but over the years far too many accidents have happened or problems arose because of misunderstood or misinterpreted spelling and grammar (descriptive linguistics).

I typically avoid spell checkers. Spell checkers aren't always perfect. Depending on the user they can make people lazy; instead of knowing the error a lot of people can trust their spell checker to simply correct them whenever they make a mistake. This often doesn't promote them to learn the mistake but to just rely on the spell checker to correct them each time. It's always a good day when Microsoft Word doesn't kick up a fuss with what I've written and goes to show people learning and not being reliant - This isn't the case with everyone, but it is the usual means of escaping a language.


I use the trusty brain. It knows exactly which language it wants to speak in, it knows which accent I am using, it knows which style of voice I am using and above all it will never break down in the sense of having a software crash (other break downs are unavoidable).


Besides, it's a forum and nobody is expected to go above and beyond the call of duty to be perfectly correct with their grammar or spelling. Maintaining a high level of literacy compared to the majority of the internet users is decent enough as it is. I've never used a web browser spell checker and I never plan to. If I must write an important piece (which may need emailing to an employer) then I write that in Word and copy and paste it over. The only issue with that is that Word often tries to 'correct' things which are fine as they are.


I think it's just safer to know your stuff than have a piece of software tell you how to do your job.
