Farmers Market

Goodly evening all....

The old girl and I stopped at the local Farmers Market while coming home today.

Here most Farmers Markets open on the May 24th long weekend and vary from village to village.
Some are open Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday and others Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

It is far too early in the season for much fresh produce but we picked up some fresh Asparagus (Plant whose succulent young shoots are cooked and eaten as a vegetable) which we like with a creamy cheese sauce and some fresh Rhubarb (Plants having long green or reddish acidic leafstalks growing in basal clumps; stems (and only the stems) are edible when cooked; leaves are poisonous) which the old girl makes into jam, pie and tarts.

Our own Asparagus and Rhubarb patch takes a beating when the children come home.  The grandchildren eat our fresh Rhubarb out of the patch with a little sugar or salt in their dirty little hands.  I am not sure they even wash the stuff bless their pointy little heads...

So how many of you folks out there have a local Farmers Market or your own weed/vegetable patch?   :)

If you want to use a good fertilizer (Any substance such as manure or a mixture of nitrates used to make soil more fertile) buy race horse manure, our tomatoes grow so fast I have to put up starting gates....
Now would I tell you folks a fib?   ;D

I've never understood why you can never find a farmer for sale at the farmers market.

I have one about four blocks away, open Wed and Sat. mornings. Half of it is indoors so it can be open year round. When fresh corn comes out I never buy it in a supermarket.
I soak it in lightly salted water for an hour with the husk on it. The throw it on the BBQ grill husk and all. The outer husk will burn somewhat while the inside is steaming, rotate corn several times while cooking. When its done grab the stem with paper towels, peel away the husk and roll it in real butter.

...my trouble is...

Because I cook Breakfasts , Dinners, Teas and Suppers, every day of the week for myself, I tend to purchase fresh vegetables, etc, every day, to ensure that everything is "fresh". I'm afraid that my local Supermarket full-fills that purpose, for obtaining a Carrot, Parsnip, Onion, or two, etc...
The cost in that case is lower than visiting a Local Farmers Market in the Countryside, and purchasing more than I need to keep fresh!
Again, I have a very large Garden, but for convenience, I'm afraid its the the local Supermarket for all my produce!
...and I don't suffer a backache...
...but I get to cuddle the lovely Check-out Ladies at the Till. MMmmmm.......!

Hi Paul...

Do they not have roadside fruit and vegetable stands where folks can sell the surplus fruit of their labours without being government regulated to death where you live?

We can purchase homemade pies, tarts and preserves along with eggs, apples and many types of berries along just about any road here except the highways which pass through a city.

And there is no sales tax...

My goodness Dave...

-Chili Sauce
-Tomatoe Butter
-Pasta Sauce...you can make so many different types
-Stewed Tomatoes with herbs

Preserves....Preserves...Preserves

-Fried tomatoes with bacon and onions
-Bacon and Tomatoe toasted sandwhich
-Tomatoe with salt or sugar from palm of hand

I love tomatoes...

Dang now I am hungry again...

The problem there, Doug...
..is that I would have to get my trusty steed out and Bike around the countryside to collect all these marvellous, fresh products....which would cost an arm and a leg in Petrol!
..whereas...
....my trusty Sainsbury's Supermarket containing everything I need, is a mere 3 minutes drive/Bike from my front door!

I can be there and back, in a flash, ready to prepare the next meal... ...!

Nowadays, its all to do with "convenience"... ...!

Paul....Beef and Onion Pie, with loads of Veg + Gravy, for Dins today!

Tomatoes are fabulous, and very good for you!

In a non-stick saucepan...
Extra Virgin Olive Oil.
Chopped, fresh Tomatoes.
Chopped and crushed Garlic.
Dried/Fresh Basil.
Ground, Black Peppercorns.
(Few grains of salt to taste!)

Simmer,'till everything is "soft".

Large saucepan...
Egg Tagliatelle. Fresh, or pre-packed "baskets"
Boil for 8-10 minutes.
Strain, and add to the other saucepan.

Cover with grated cheese, and mix well.

Serve on a pre-heated plate.

Fantastic, hot Supper Dish!.... [smiley=2vrolijk_08.gif]...(Will keep you awake all night!)... ...!
