Am I the only person in the whole wide world who switches his computer off when I'm not using it? Apart from the obvious fire risk, leaving all those millions of computers permanently switched on & connected to the Internet when they're not being used seems an awful waste of resources to me.

Exacly Doug ,I had many argue with so many people that thinks PC are like servers ,a 7200rpm Hdd is spinning all the time ,they don't see Video card and CPU  has fans , a lot of people do this ,I don't understand it ,Its simple the more you are not using the PC and turn it completly off ,the life of this computer will last much longer..

My phone is probably the only thing that stays switched on, and my watch (though it isn't feasable to turn that off and it is such low power anyway)

Sometimes I do go away and leave the computer on, but mostly I am on here.

I am wondering because we had our home and outbuildings rewired to 220 several years back and our computers are not that old if that is why our hydro bill seems constant all the time.

I leave my PC on when I'm not using it. But I am running distributed computing on it almost 24/7 so I'm doing some good when it's on. Folding@Home is a good project.  :)

If I ain't looking at the screen the power is off.  The only time it's on with out me, is when it's defragen or doing a virus/spyware scan, then it will shut down by itself. But at night it gets shut down at the surgestrip. And now that the electric company just up the rates 26%, i'm even thinking about putting my fridge on a timer so it won't come on at night. Plus i'm going to shut off my flood lights at night and just go back to using good ol trip wires and booby traps setup around the garage ;D ;D nothing like hearing some idiot burgler crying in pain cause they got fish hooks in there eyes ::) ::) I just gotta rember to deactivte the traps before I let the hounds out!

A 220/240 Volt supply uses cables half the diameter of 110 Volt cables to carry supply the same Amperage/Current wattage.
W (wattage) = I (current) x E (voltage); that is, if the voltage is doubled (110 vs 220), the currrent is halved to provide the same power wattage.

Actually they have to deliver around 300 volts. As it is AC, the measured peak to peak voltage is 220 volts.
:-? Are you folks just testing my memory or what? Matt, peak-to-peak is precisely what it sounds like, a peak-to-peak (OK, actually to subpeak) measurement of the sinewave; the AC sinewave reaches a 'peak' above neutral then reverses to a 'peak' below neutral. DC, ideally, is a constant potential above (positive) or below (negative) the neutral (ground). Because AC continually changes direction, it provides an average potential versus the constant DC potential (voltage): the book equivelent average (RMS) is 70.7% of AC peak voltage (300VAC ~ 212VDC).
When current is supplied over long distances, however, there is an inherent loss but DC drops much more quickly than AC; this is one of the reasons Edison (DC Power) lost out to Westhouse (AC Power).

:P
