Permanently switched on?

Postby Hagar » Wed Mar 24, 2010 4:17 am

Am I the only person in the whole wide world who switches his computer off when I'm not using it? Apart from the obvious fire risk, leaving all those millions of computers permanently switched on & connected to the Internet when they're not being used seems an awful waste of resources to me.

Nope: I'm completly offline at night - no cell phone, pc or anything else. And whenever I leave the house I switch my pcs off, too!  ;)

Mine gets switched on first thing in the morning to check my E-Mail, browse a couple of my regular Sites to see if there is anything new, fire up a few of my favourite games to pass the time in between cooking meals, housework, etc, listening to streaming music on my favourite Music Channel; (Live 365)....

If I'm going shopping I either switch the 'puter off, or run a Defrag, or Virus Scan.

I ALWAYS switch it off at the socket outlet at nights, together with all other electrical appliances (except the refrigerator), to eliminate a fire hazard, whilst I am upstairs in Bed!... :o...!

So...being at home for most of the day (Retired), the computer is mostly switched on, and being used...adding to my Electric Bill...and slowly destroying the Ozone Layer....(...and busy fighting off invading Aliens with my trusty Laser Blaster!)... [smiley=evil.gif]...!

Paul....in an Electrifying Mood... 8-)...!

I always shut mine down and turn off everything at the mains except the fridge and the boiler at night.
I've noticed I'm the only person in the office who shuts down their machine as well....

I tried leaving mine on permanently over the past three months in the vain hope that it would increase Global Warming to the extent of reducing my fuel bill in trying to keep warm in my House..... :-?

...didn't work... :'(...!

Paul...Cold...and with a big heating fuel bill!... :(...!

We switch off everything in the house at night or when we go out. I always make my round through the mansion (I wish) turning off the tv, stereo, pc, laptop, lights and stuff. Only thing left on are the fridge, freezer and the fire/smoke detectors.

[color=#000000]It may be a bit wasteful, but since it takes so long to boot up, I leave mine on most of the time. The first thing I do when I get up is check my sugar and take my meds. Since I keep a log of the results and where I stick myself on the computer, I don't like to wait for it to boot up. When you poke a sharp instrument in your hand and your tummy every day, you tend to forget where it was last, especially when your memory gets a bit foggy. Especially when your memory gets foggy.

Sometimes I leave it on but most times I shut it down before I succumb to a state of unconsciousness (generally described as sleeping); mine is not currently connected to the internet, either.

I shut mine down when not using it. This one boots pretty fast anyway.  :)

I also shut down at the end of the day... just stupid to leave the PC and monitor powered up while I'm sleeping, it only takes a few seconds to boot in the morning ( a lot less time than I require to boot!), and shutdown/startup is a good way to find problems with the computer, rather than waiting until you're in the middle of something and it sh*ts the bed on you.  ;D

My computer is set to 'Power Save' after about 10 minutes of non-use.  So I normally don't shut it down, but I do restart it every day to dump the RAM and make sure everything is running smooth.

I leave my laptop on 24/7... since I don't wanna be offline on Skype in case someone calls

The big rig I do turn off at night, mainly because it sounds like a rocket powered vaccuum cleaner when it's on... and it shares a room with me....  plus, the thing draws like 800W

I shut down my PC when I go to bed, and also if I am going to be away from the house for more than a couple hours. The phone is always on though, except it is in "silent" mode between 11pm and whenever I wake up. It's also on silent during most of my classes.
