Postby Flying Trucker » Sat Mar 20, 2010 12:23 pm

Good afternoon all... :)

The old girl and I want to purchase a new television.

We have two now, one is a large RCA floor model with a CD/DVD, 8 Track Tape, Recorder, Record Player and AM/FM Radio all in a wooden black walnut console.

Hi Larry... :)

Yes we had an 8 Track installed as we have so many of them, still great and only use them once in awhile.

The record player has 33, 45 & 78 I believe.

The chap that built these units did them custom and his profession was designing and building the inside of motor homes for doctors, lawyers etc.
Wonderful chap, family business and I asked him why he did not get into doing boats, his answer was no time.   ;D

Thanks for that link Doug.   :)

One of the chaps at one of our local bugsmasher fields is going to have their family friend call us.  Apparently he is up on this electronic stuff and he used to do television repairs at one time.  He is now retired and as a hobby builds computers for folks.
I shall also see what he has to say.

Thanks all for the replies.   :)

LCD is more durable, efficient, and lighter (big plasmas are heavy!) Plasmas are improving, but they're basically obsolete, as LCDs also improve.
The key thing to watch out for with LCDs, however, is "good blacks." Even an area that has color will also contain a number of black pixels. You want your classic movies, especially the B&W ones, to look rich. Plasmas generally have richer blacks, but LCDs are catching up.

Thanks for the "Link" Sean...glad you jumped in as I was going to send you a "PM" about this.   :)

Will go through the link tomorrow after church.  I am also wondering about weight as our walls well at least most of them are lath and plaster and not drywall.  I can drywall where I want it placed however that seems like a lot of work.
We have discussed this and we do not want this on a piece of furniture but mounted to the wall.  I realize there will be covered over cables running down the wall but that is fine.

Also wondering, should this be at eye level or mounted where we need to look up at it.  In most theaters one looks up a bit I find.  Probably because of the number of seats and seating arrangement.

LOL, my Dad has the exact same set-up. He watches the news once in a while and occasionally a movie. Personally, I can't remember the last time I watched TV, I guess I got it from the old man.  ;)

Joking aside, I would say that LCD is the way to go. My reasoning is that when I watch a movie I usually use my computer which is a laptop and naturally has an LCD monitor. I've noticed that movies look better on my computer than they do on my CRT television. They also look better than they do on my friends plasma TV which is supposed to be "high definition". That could come from the fact that my monitor is a lot small than his TV, so the picture is kind of condensed... if that makes sense. :P Anyway I do know that LCDs are lighter and less expensive, plus You could probably hook your computer up to it for the ultimate flight sim view!

High definition merely refers to the number of pixels going up the side of the screen. 720 means 720 vertical pixels, 1080 is 1080 pixels. Depending on where you live, is anywhere from between 480 and 576 p/i. Of course, if the media you're looking at is standard definition then, as you said, the image will be blown up and not look as good. High Definition doesn't mean the image will look good, only that a certain number of pixels are present. The same goes that you shouldn't base the quality of a digital camera off the number of pixels (mega pixels, to be more accurate) that the photos have. All that says is how big the image is, not how good the image is. My little analogy is this: Imagine you have an A4 sheet of paper and an A1 sheet of paper... Give the A4 sheet to (an alive) Salvador Dali and give the A1 sheet to an infant... The chances are, the image by Dali will be far better though the one by the infant will be bigger. So it goes to show that size isn't everything and it is certainly not a show of quality, though as size increases, usually the quality gets better too.

For the quality of image, check the contrast ratio figure to show you how intense the range is from white to black on the screen which will give you nicer looking images. And of course, if you can, see a running demo of the TV to get an idea of its actual quality. A lot of shops show the TVs working.

The 1080i or 1080p bit tells you how the image is displayed (interlaced or progressive). I believe progressive is where it loads the image from top to bottom going down each pixel row, and interlaced is where it loads every odd row then the even rows. Progressive gives less blur and slightly better frame rate.

If you're sitting far back or plan to invest in HD-DVD (pretty much dead technology) or Blu-Ray, then get HD. If you have a TV service providing HD channels and they are ones you'd be likely to watch, get HD.

An LCD or Plasma should connect to your computer easily enough. My near-decade old CRT TV (which we still use as it does the job just fine) can run the video from my computer if I wanted it to.

I prefer the picture on LCD, it seems much clearer.

Just to throw more confusion into the mix LED TVs are the way to go much clearer and sharper than either plasma or LCD.

http://www.ledtvprices.com/

The above site is for the UK ...... although I'm sure you'll find a Canadian equivalent.

My wife has an LED screen on her laptop ......... the clarity of the images on it is amazing.

Thanks for the information folks... :)

I am wondering how soon all televisions sold will be High Definition as that was mentioned too me by a salesperson.
Cable here is pushing High Definition at no extra cost unless I misunderstand their advertising and periodic phone calls.

They also supply the High Definition Box for a monthly rental but they can be purchased at a store as well.

Yes "LED" televisions, I remember that being mentioned and are they not the most expensive right now?

Who needs TVs when you can get this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6824001305
:)
But if you want a good tv try newegg.
Plasmas tend to cost more from what I understand. Here is the cheapest 58 inch newegg has(no 55) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6889102302

Here are two LCD tvs that are cheap for 55 inch
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6889005090

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6889253210

and incase you want to look at a 50 inch
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6889102368
Now if you were to buy from newegg, I would go ahead and spend the extra $100 to get plasma over lcd.
I don't know much about tvs, but maybe a google search can help ya?

Gosh if I had that kind of spare change I might just buy that 82 inch Samsung... ;D

I think it would make a great Flight Simulator monitor.   ;)

The largest I have seen was at Future Shop somewhere downtown Toronto several years ago.
This thing was mounted on the wall and was huge, they had FSX flying I believe a Cessna 172 and I stood there and watched this thing for a hour.  They even had easy boy chairs to sit in and watch this.
I would say it had to be 10 or 12 feet by 8 or 10 feet, maybe even larger.  Yes it was for sale.

I could buy a used motion flight simulator for what they wanted for that unit.  I looked at one the other day that looked like an old Link Trainer but all metal and composite material.  It was not for sale.
