I have never understood why humans insist on interacting with wild animals capable of killing them. It is my opinion, that they should not be in captivity unless it is for our well being, or theirs, which is a rare occurance. But then there are those that make the mistake of interacting with them in the wild. Sometimes, we just never learn.

Maybe Tilikum has just had enough of being incarcerated and made to do tricks for humans.

They're called Killer Whales for a reason.

Kind of ironic that they are not as a species killers any more than they are whales. 25-ish reported deaths involving theses animals and all from captive examples. Up until this death the other deaths had been put down to playing (no teeth involved). Not a single wild animal has been reported to have attacked an human. I am in no way condoning the captivity here, just pointing out. And they are dolphin family members not whales.

From what I gather, the trainer slipped and fell in the tank. It would seem this triggered the whale to go back to its roots, and get the food (probably thought it was a seal). We all hear about shark attacks and how they quite often are a case of mistaken identity, I believe this is the same case. Just because its in captivity, does not mean the whale will not go back to its wild roots.

Reminds me of something Chris Rock said in one of his standups about the tiger that went "crazy" at a Sigfried and Roy show. He said, "That tiger didnt go crazy, that tiger went tiger!"

Rob makes a good point... When I saw the Shamu performance last autumn, they wore wet suits coloured black and white with a 'natural' looking pattern on them. Chasing the food seems like a realistic conclusion.




As said, play with fire and get burnt... The clue is in the name of the type of whale. Training and practise doesn't mean that incidents won't happen.

Trainer Dawn Brancheau, with 40 years old ,the two girls in the Photo looks more younger..
