Indiana...The land of Irony

Postby ShaneG_old » Mon Feb 15, 2010 10:08 am

Where I live, there is no available home phone service, and no phone service through the cable company either...yet.

So it's cell phones or nothing out here. Naturally, I don't have one. I don't really like them much.

However, I do get a 1 Mbps steady download rate, and the best cable reception I've ever had. The best DL rate I've ever had up till now was 500kbps, and I thought that was really fast.

Too bad I can't call anyone to tell them about it.  :-[

Oh yeah, and it's snowing here again, the news calling for 5-10 more inches of snow. My road is still covered with snow from the last round.  :'(

Fozzerphone would work much better than smoke signals right now.  I never thought about Skype. I'll have to look into that a bit more.  [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Since The first post here, we've received 3" of snow. And the kids have been released several hours early from school.

Goodly afternoon Shane... ;)

Sent you another PM...same topic..hope you get it... ;)

That sounds like a wonderful spot to live if you are young, we enjoy our solitude but with amenities like telephone, high speed internet, mail delivery, school bus pickup, garbage pickup, snow plow service, police, ambulance and fire service not more than thirty (30) minutes away and all use the same emergency GPS Grid System.

We are on well and septic and I can pump water up directly from the boat house/river to water the gardens and fruit trees.

They are talking about putting all our hydro and phone wires underground now in all the rural areas.

Oh what I would give to have my mail delivered to the house once again.  :-[  ;)

It's been a long time since I've had to use a P.O.Box.  It's a nice way to get to know who handles your mail, but it makes trips to the box on days like this rather hard. Not good if you're expecting something important. With my POB, I have to take on the motto "Neither rain, nor sleet, nor snow... ", and I don't much like it.  ;D

Trash pickup is available, but it's cheaper to run it to the dump myself, we have no city water, and no fire hydrants, so I have to wonder what it is they do when a fire breaks out. No police station, but I have a cop who lives across the street from me.  ::)
If it wasn't for the paved roads, I'd swear this couldn't be considered a village, as much as an odd group houses on the main road to nowhere in particular.  ;D  ;)

Hi Shane... :)

I am sure your Volunteer Fire Department must have at least one (1) tanker and a pumper which probably holds six hundred (600) gallons of water which can be mixed with a retardent.
Both units probably have the ability to pump water from a swimming pool or stream, river, pond etc. and often several tankers will work in relays if Mutual Aid is activated.

Good idea to get to know your Volunteer Fire Department and perhaps join and most Volunteer Fire Persons now do get paid for meetings and attending the odd basement saving.   ;D

No Police Station, at one time some of the Hamlets here only had one holding cell, it was about eight feet long, three feet wide, no windows and a very large steel bar door at one end open to the public.  The holding cell was in the Post Office.   ;D
We now have a Provincial Police Service which works very well.   ;)

No local police station? A 12 gauge and a handgun can take care of the home defense... ;D
