Spelling Question

This is one thing I'm not really sure on, here in the UK, do we use "S" or "Z" in words like realised, or realized, organise, organize and so on.
Or do we use both in English?

I think you will find both in the Oxford English Dictionary which means that either is considered correct.

Being an old-fashioned git I prefer realise, organise etc., spelt with an S as I was taught at school. 8-)

PS. I realise I'm fighting a losing battle but someone has to maintain standards.

Hmm, so it's gasoline or gazoline, right?  I tend to pronounce it "gazoline", much to the amusement of some friends, but that's just my quirk.

The Z would be correct in the US. The Webster Dictionary is the recognised (recognized) authority on American English spelling.

I prefer to use the words Petrol or Diesel, rather than Gas(oline), which can be confused with coal gas, natural gas, bottled gas, etc, etc,.... ...!

...and I use "s"'s, instead of "z"'s...(in general)... ...!

..and St. Louis is pronounced; Saint Loo-ee... ...!

...and the rubber doughnut of a motor-car wheel is a "Tyre"......."Tire" is what I get when I am feeling; "Sleepy"...like now!.. ...!

We still spell single syllable words with an 's' sounded as a 'z' (rise, wise).  For most else it seems strange to spell realize like excise, unless you're looking for more excercise.

I've never heard "petrol" used in the U.S., it's always "gas" and understood to be gasoline.

Although I was reading a paper from the 19th Century the other day and saw 'realised' spelt with a Z..... :-?
