That's so rediculous. We can't catch the real people, but a kid is checked. Come on, at 2 years old, really? :o  :-?  ::)  :P

When was the last time you heard about terrorists on El-Al?

What Israel can teach us about security

That is, how can we make our airports more like Israel's, which deal with far greater terror threats with far less inconvenience.

"It is mind boggling for us Israelis to look at what happens in North America, because we went through this 50 years ago," said Rafi Sela, the president of AR Challenges, a global transportation security consultancy. He has worked with the RCMP, the U.S. Navy Seals and airports around the world.

I agree with Jim, here is a good example http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hindawi_affair
Consider this, he'd got the woman through British security (at the height of IRA bombings) and it was El Al's secondary checks got the bomb.

It never ceases to amaze me how short sighted "systems" can be, but particularly the TSA. Mind you we have some major jobsworths in the UK of world class standard. I am pretty sure we could win a gold medal at the More Than My Jobs Worth Olympics, mind you The TSA and Germany's Beamtin (government employees) could also give us a run for our money ;D

I managed to get through security at Luton, with a Leatherman (complete with blade!). It had been mistakenly left in the back pocket of my hand luggage from a previous biking holiday. Scary thing was it was in Bulgaria, of all places, where they found it on the return journey!!!

Not only is does all this security seem inefficient, but it really doesnt seem to work!

Miami S.W.A.T (Sky1) taught me that children can often be given drugs to hide in their clothes as 'they won't be checked'. It wouldn't surprise me if someone tried the same with an explosive. For that reason, I think that age shouldn't matter when they are being frisked. However, when they are being frisked simply because of their name and no other suspicious activity, then it is a cause for concern. Why didn't this computer database show up photos, ages, ethnicities, etc of the people in mention?

Security measures will only work if everyone is checked. Once you start to avoid certain groups of people just because they are in an 'unlikely to cause issues' group, then you have made a loophole for others. But next time, they should double check who they are looking at, and the people they are looking for.

I got through Heathrow and LAX with a sort of multi-tool on my wallet. I forgot all about it and only when I was away did I find out I shouldn't have it on me. Though, I did get checked 3 times but hey ho, I am back.

Either a loophole or a legal problem. No matter how right the stereotype is, any cvil rights group will freak out if you select on skin color and other characteristics.

I'm almost certain that if i went to the US with my girlfriend the both of us will be getting the extra check.

And the reason why El-Als system does work is that anyone flying with them EXPECTS to do the questions thing. On other airlines they disappear in the dining rooms and arrive at the gate 5 seconds before the door closes

The computer list this kid is on has over 10,000 names on it.  All the list is first and last name.  They are trying to update it to include birthdate, which is why that question is required when purchasing a ticket now.

Over all, TSA is useless.  They are a feel good department, just there to make the uninformed feel safer.  Just go to their website and they will pat themselves on the back for stopping X number of people with prohibited items.  Truth is, for every person they stop, there are probably 5 more that passed.  The only reason we haven't had many more terrorist attacks is because they haven't tried.  Besides which, a 9/11 style attack was a one shot deal, and the terrorists know that.  Before 9/11, procedures for hijacking were much different.  Today, the passengers would help stop an attack as much as anything else.

I lol'd hard at the title and the article.

Why do those stupid terrorists always have to try and blow up planes so that the US government gets so afraid that they actually start believing that an 8 year old kid could be a terrorist just because he shares his name with a terrorist or whatever it said?

Him being a terrorist is almost as likely as me ever becoming a Miley Cyrus-fanboy.

=)

I have my own theories on why Osama and his operatives focus on American aviation.  I saw a website a couple years ago that listed aircraft crashes that killed famous and/or important people.  On that list I discovered that both Osama's brother and father were killed in airplane crashes, one in Texas, and the other overseas, but with an American pilot.  Coincidence...you decide.  The Bin Laden family used to be very wealthy and did a lot of business with America, now their son wants to destroy it.
