I shudder to think of how children are 'raised' these days, not to mention how they may turn out. If I were to currently have a rug rat, I would probably end up in jail. IMHO, we have de-evolved when it comes to rearing children.

There are a lot of decent children around nowadays despite what you see in the media. My daughter was raised in the same way as I was. We taught her by example & our house was full of love & laughter. Of course, there were tears as well as she was not wrapped up in cotton wool. She & my son-in-law are now raising my two lovely granddaughters in the same way with the help of their proud grandparents.*

We've been very lucky & I realise that some poor kids never get the chance of a traditional family upbringing.

*PS. I'm just sad that mainly because of paranoia about child molesters they will never experience the same freedom as we did.

Different times, different standards. Today, that would work with X% counted on one hand. Respect is a given and everything has to be free.

Matt

I still believe that it's down to the parents to set the standards & teach by example.

But that is the problem, they don't. My wife is a teacher and it would seem that it is her responsibility to teach the "little darlings" please, please may I have, please can I, to name a few and most importantly........Thank you. Also, you wait until adults have finished talking before you interrupt. Basics such as eating with both hands i.e with knife and fork not with fingers and spoon. You may laugh, but this is stuff that my wife has to contend with each time she has a new class at the beginning of the year. Also parents that refuse to believe that their child can or will do any wrong and any time that there is a problem between two children it is always the other childs fault.

When the basics are not taught at home then there is no standard to live by as you get older. My two boys, four and six, know very well what is what. It pays, how many four year old can you go to a restaurant with and they sit and eat and are not running around annoying other people for example. Consequences are something that is missing from today's education and discipline. They are something that we talk about after the fact and it is way too late by then.

Your wife has my sympathy but again, it all depends on the parents. I'm proud to say that I've been able to take my grandchildren into a restaurant from a very early age. Nothing I enjoy more than taking them out for lunch. They brighten up the place as soon as we walk in. My granddaughters & their little friends are all well-behaved because they have caring & loving parents who teach them these things.

Well Paul, as you get older you have two choices. Mellow with age or become a grumpy old sod. I approach life with a smile on my face. I find that works wonders & most people reciprocate. ;)

There's too many miserable old buggers about these days. :P

I think the only time we can half do this sort of thing nowadays is Scouts; apart from that, nothing.
