Happy Veterans day here in the States. Remember all of those who fought.

Wow, just wow. 

I'm not forcing my views here, but I just thought that on a forum with so many members from countries affected by war & so many members interested in the military, particularly air forces across the world - to see just two replies posted as a mark of respect for servicemen & women everywhere, it's somewhat saddening.

Again, not forcing anybody to do anything, I just thought that a few more people would've had something to contribute.

Hello Martyn......!

I think you will find that the English (British) in particular, are a reserved People, and commemorate occasions like this in their usual quiet way, without a song and a dance, and a banging of Drums, and the endless flying of Flags.

I remembered this special occasion, standing quietly to attention, (like many others), in my Living Room, wearing my Poppy, and

Like I said, I'm not forcing anyone, I just thought a few more might post a response.

My post was not my only effort, I too have been to the Menin Gate at 8pm for The Last Post, I have visited many sacred sites & paid my respects including every D-Day beach, the American cemetery at Omaha, The Somme & Verdun. I go to the battlefields & memorials in France & pay my respects nearly every year & am in the middle of planning another visit for the new year.

My respects are slightly more than a few keystrokes over a cup of coffee.

LOl, sorry Doug, that quote may have come over a bit harsher than intended, nor was I thinking that Matt implied I was being a keyboard warrior.

I appreciate all of your views on how people show their respect. I was just saying that out of ALL of the huge number if members on here, I thought there might be more than three of us posting. Nobody is right or wrong either way.

Since I've broken my golden rule I might as well continue; "In for a penny, in for a pound" as the saying goes. I wonder how many of that huge number of members post more than a couple of times or ever visit this part of the forum. Not that many I suspect. :-/

Hopefully I haven't offended anyone, I don't think I have. Similarly I have not been offended myself. Nor do I intent to fall out with anybody over this subject. Next year I think I will follow your lead Doug & keep my trap shut.

The outlook undoubtedly varies from the younger generations, further from the event, to those of us in a generation closer, particularly having had personal relationships to those more closely involved. That someone puts mention of it most certainly doesn't offend, however.
As a more recent member now knows, I made up a mini-mission some years ago for WWI with a memorial video (mainly for the aviators involved in the deadly flying circus of April 21, 1918); still not able to upload even the zipped files without a time out. We certainly haven't forgotten but there's a restrictive nature to blaring the same personal, mundane acknowledgement every year; neither do we want it to become the 'happy holiday' that some dates have become respective to a subject more solemn -- this being said by someone who tries, at least, to see a 'lighter' side of things.

Not sure I agree with that. Most people in my country have at least one family member who died in one of the World Wars but Armistice Day is not just about the Great War. Far too many people are being killed in the name of their country even as I type this. Most people know somebody who has been killed or severely wounded in more recent times. Unfortunately our leaders never seem to learn from history & carry on making the same mistakes.

A lot of how you commemorate this will mainly depend on the the country you live in. Different countries have their own culture & traditions which people from other parts of the world might find strange. If I know where a forum member comes from I can almost tell how they would respond in this topic. That makes their comments unnecessary.
