I cant make up my mind, iPod touch or Zune HD

Postby coolpick » Wed Sep 09, 2009 6:27 pm

I'm in the market for a new MP3 player, and I cant make up my mind on which to get, the 8GB iPod touch or the 16GB Zune HD. As far as players go I kinda like the Zune better since it has a built in HD radio(but no big deal, and is larger for the same price, but again no big deal).

The thing is, if I get the Zune I can get Zune pass which  is only 15USD a month for unlimited downloadsBut, in order to keep playing those songs on the Zune, I have to keep a subscription to Zunepass every month while I have to straight up buy songs from iTunes(which is getting kinda expensive). Overall its 180USD a year for Zune pass for the same price I get only ~180songs on itune

Funny that this has come up, as i'm considering getting a new MP3 player also. I don't like iPods, so i've been considering the Zune.

But i'm curious. Does it require its own software like the iPod to transfer the music over, or do you open it up like an external drive with explorer and simply drag your music onto it?

Yes, the Zune has its own program for music management. :)

Pity. The one thing I really like about my old Sansa is that I can plug it into any computer, and the computer sees it as an external drive, allowing me to drag my music over in Windows Explorer. No complicated software required.... 8-)

Touch.  I love mine, and yes, I am biased (I've worked for apple the last 2 summers), but the touch is amazing.  I'd say it's better primarily because it's proven, with tons of great apps available right now.  I bought mine last winter and can't go anywhere without it.  I mainly use it for the web browser oddly enough, but it plays music pretty well :P

That Zune pass is good. I have Rhapsody, which is similar, and even if you keep it for 20 years you wont have payed as much as 4000 iTunes songs. Plus, if you like the song, you can always buy and download the mp3 so you can keep it forever. However, I will admit that the Touch looks awesome, and the instant Apple does a monthy thing, I will buy it. Until then, my 8GB Samsung YP-P2 Touchscreen is great.

Same with mine. On second thought, if you don't need a lot of hard drive space, grab a Rhapsody compatible Samsung/Sansa.

I was looking at the 8gb Zune at the PX today, but I just now discovered that the Zune HD is something new, and coming out next week.

So I may just hold out and get the Zune HD player after it is released...

My poor old sansa's audio jack is tweaked, so the audio output is a little messed up at times. I tried taking it apart, but was unable to fix it :'(

I just use my old Sony cell phone, which works a lot like the Sansa.  I can just plug it in and access the memory chip on it.

I've pretty much made up my mind on the Zune HD, I played with a 2G iPod Touch and looked at a bunch of apps on iTunes. I really dont care for apps anymore(which the Zune may have apps also). I just want it to play music and get on the internet, and the HD has a HD radio which is really nice.
